Ryan makes an interesting point. I'm half black, half white. I was raised by my white father. I don't really know my mother, or many of my black relatives. I was raised in a white town, with a white extended and immediate family. When I hit 5 I noticed it was a little weird. Most of my life I've been the only minority around. Weird stuff. Racial dynamics in this country are fscked. Most people when they first look at me and my father say "are you adopted". Even though if you look at our faces they're extremely similar. We also share the same demeanor, but I guess that's because he raised me. Anyway, between me and him there never was race. We've never even really discussed it. It's just father/son, the way it's supposed to be.

You'd be surprised how much race is brought up to me by other people. People ask me stupid questions like if you were given a choice what would you rather be... Idiotic question that doesn't really have an answer. Do you like black girls or white girls? neither... I like spanish, middle eastern, asian, and mixed girls. People baffle me how they can just feel privvy to pry into my life. I don't go up to random white people and say "you got jungle fever?".

"I like hot girls."

At least that neighborhood speaks English. Try going overseas to a country that doesn't speak English and you'll get the true racial minority experience.

white privelidge lol

Dude - it's is a privelidge to not have to think about your race on a daily basis. Ask any black person or person of minority - there is usually not a day that goes by where you aren't forced to be aware of your race. Being white and in the majority - most are ignorant to that experience, making it exponentially harder for white people to understand what it's like to be a minority.

You know of this because you are white?
There are black areas and latino areas where whites or asians feel this way.
Quit being a racist.

I needed to wash a few comforters, and a bunch of other clothes - I figured what would take me over two days to wash with my little washer and dryer, I could knock out in 3 hours at the laundrymat down the street.

The area it's located in is primarily a lower income black neighborhood. They were pretty busy - I found it interesting that I was the only white person in a building full of black people. I've never had this happen to me, but I did feel a small amount of intimidation being in the extreme racial minority - what makes it even weirder is that I'm studying this exact kind of subject in my Ethics class right now.

I won't go into all of the philosophical details, but it's an interesting experience having to think about your race in such terms; a realization of my whiteness. It certainly brings an element of humanity to what I've been studying. We, as white people, take for granted never having to think about our race in these kinds of situations (something minorities experience every day). It's a white priviledge, and it's good to be able to see what it's like on the other side of the coin; to be a minority. I can only imagine what it's like for a person who's a minority in a sea full of white people.

So there I sat doing my homework for my ethics class (race and the death penalty is the subject right now), next to this nice black lady as I waited for my laundry to finish. We talked for about an hour about the essay, and she offered some good insight into the subject.

It's not very interesting, but that was my ethical lesson for the day. 🙂

Thats actually very interesting and you are obviously pretty intelligent. Hopefully more people will read this thread.

hey its my good buddy proletariat. How've you been man? I havent been in P&N in a while 🙂

Pretty good.

I'm actually curious though, do Indians think of themselves as a race? My uncle is from North India and he has caucasian features but dark skin.

there are two types of indians, people of dravidian descent and of aryans descent. your uncle might be of aryan descent becaues they tend to have more caucasian feature, while the dravidians are much darkers. Also, since the aryans invaded from the north, the majority of the aryans are in the north while the dravidians are in the south. However, you said he was dark skinned and thats because the line seperating the two types is dissapearing. My mother is from the south but she is light skinned and my dad is from gujarat but his ancestory might be from north india or the middle east but he's slightly darker than my mother.

as for as being considered a race, I consider 'desis' to be anyone of indian, pakistani, bangladesi, sri lankan, or nepali origin. we all have similar characteristics and share many cultural aspects.

Inspector Jihad,

Your theory of Aryan invasion is BS!!!

correct me then...as far as I know, its accurate, but it might not be.

Laundromat.

i am hating them too. Looking to buy another house now (had my first here in an exclusive neighborhood at 23)...now median is $420k+ This is mostly for condos.

However, no matter where your laudromat is, the derelicts of society will find it and then think they are special and use the 'you know who I be?' line while their kids run rampant and spill soda, and the whole family eats food on the tables.

I am saving for a house, we do have machines here but there is only two and they are small. 2 hours to do a week of laundry is better than 5-6.

Our first house purchase will be something along the line of a 'Duet or Calypso'.

Heh. 🙂

Fortunately we have a washer/dryer.

Used to go to the laundromat though. It costs almost exactly twice as much as running the washer/dryer.

Whites are the minority. There are more Asians in this world than any other race.

Not when the world is broken down by country you are living in, then state, then county, then city, then town, then ...

Funny, as a Chinese-American driving my young daughter thru Chinatown West (Eastern Clement St.), we were slightlly shocked to see a white person in a predominately Asian neighboorhood here in San Francisco. My daughter said to me that he(white person) looked like he did not belong here and I was just about to say the same thing. It is just a different perspective on how we see others...

How am I being racist by addressing this social issue?!?! Whether you want to admit it or not, we're all predjudice in some way or another - it's human nature. Anyone who says they aren't biased in some way is lying to yourself and themselves.

I'm talking about the US - here we, as white people, can feel comfortable knowing that we are the general accepted majority. Yes - there are some areas where this situation is flipped, but in general, white people can feel comfortable knowing that they will never have to address their whiteness, or be concious of it on a daily basis.

Single White Male Student in a Laundromat doing Laundry? This thread has SHENS written all over it!
