Interesting question...

Example please?

In a certain situation, it may be to stay on the favorable side of that person.

How do we know they are wrong? Maybe we're just too young or stupid to realize how right they are.

We just care what they think of us irregardless of whether it is true or not and it is interesting when we care if it is not true. So, why do we care what others think when we know they are wrong? Because we want them to know the truth about us, why is that?

Look up Freud and "ID/Ego/superego"

Not a smart arse answer, but that should answer all your questions.

You'r OP is badly worded.

I didn't realized you were going for "Why do we care what people think about us when we know they are wrong?

To answer your question, If a person incorrectly thinks something bad about us they can spread gossip about you which will likely harm your business and personal relationships in the future.

People base their dealings with other people on what they think of those people, thus being held in good esteem yields very tangible rewards in situations where you depend on others.
