Might that be for HDMI audio throughput?

Audio pass-through is my guess. Like those skinny cables that used to connect CD-ROM and sound card. From the on-board sound header (motherboard or sound card) to the video card, then to HDMI.. ? If that's the case I'd be most interested in how many channels it supports.
