Interesting Olympic Trivia

GasX

Lifer
In the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, The USA won 6 gold medals.

1 Gold was won by the hockey team in the famous "Miracle on Ice"

Who won the other 5 and what events were they?

The answer is quite remarkable and I will post it in a few minutes. Without googling it, see if you can guess one of them...

Ding!

Yes, while one medal was won in a team sport (greatest thing ever if you were a kid back then!!!) 5 golds were won by one man and it is but a footnote in history.

500m Eric Heiden, USA 38.03 OR
1000m Eric Heiden, USA 1:15.18 OR
1500m Eric Heiden, USA 1:55.44 OR
5000m Eric Heiden, USA 7:02.29 OR
10,000m Eric Heiden, USA 14:28.13 WR

That is like Carl Lewis winning the 100M one day and then winning the marathon a few days later while cleaning up in the all of the middle distances in between.

Do those records still stand to this day?

No - All of the current world records for those events were set at the Salt Lake City Olympics.
