Interesting math problem......

The surface of a pond is a 40x40 square. A reed in the middle of it sticks 8 units out of the water. But when it is pulled gently to the nearest edge of the pond, it barely reaches it. How deep is the pond?

EH?

21 units

model it as a right triangle and use pythagorean theorem... hypotenuse is 8+x, one side is 20, the other side is x.

Not to nit-pick or anything, but if it is in the middle then how is there a nearest edge? Shouldn't it be equally distant from all four edges? 😀
