Interesting, listening to music at a low volume

I had some music playing at a really low volume this morning because of the fscking owls... So I had some music play really quietly enough to silence them but not be distracting. So I go to listen to some music and it's really really low, I felt like I could only hear mumbling and was wondering if anything was playing... So I keep listening and now, it's almost as if the volume level has increased substantially, I know it's not listening level because my case fan is too loud but it's much much louder and I just thought it was interesting how the volume changed with out me *actually* changing the volume. Hm.

That's just the way your brian works. You get used to the low volume after a while. The same thing happens to me, I'll end up turning down the volume on something 2 or 3 times after getting used to it at progressively lower volumes.

Once you turn it up, eventually you get used to it and it seems quieter so then you turn it up again, etc. But it works the same way turning it down. It'd bad to get used to it when it's loud because you damage your hearing without even realizing it.

I always try to keep our TV and such as low as I can when I can still hear everything. In the morning 8 even seems loud for some channels. Normally 12 or so is average though later in the day just because there's more background noise and such.

Best way to tell if it's too loud is to leave the room for a while and go somewhere else, then go back in and if it seems loud initially, turn it down.

Your ears adapted, much like your eyes adapt to the dark.

Or more like your eyes adapt to being nearsided or farsided... >.<

People apparently kept telling me I played music at a low volume, since canalphones isolate most of the noise around the ear you stick it in. So it's good for me 🙂

Listening quality doesn't have a significant amount to do with sound intensity. It's perfectly possible to enjoy music at a low volume, and it's a good thing.

How much did your canalphones cost? I might be interested in a pair.

I bought Sharp MD33's on audiocube.com... Imported headphones from Japan but made in china lol... But still, they sound better than sony ex-71's... $39 + $10 shipping...

You can always get, Etymotics (or etymonics, forget... something like that) er6i's, shure e2c's, or anything headfi recommends.

Mssrs. Fletcher and Munsen did extensive work at Bell Labs on the human hearing response curve. Some of the more important results as to loudness and perceived level, imho.
ANYONE who claims to be an audiophile and hasn't read at least some of their work, or at the very least referenced the Fletcher -Munson Curve is a charlatan.
