Interesting limits discovery on 8800GTX

Still very immature drivers (of course). I'm not persuaded to rid my rig of the 8800GTX.. its still the fastest card on the market.
The only buyer beware here is if you cant afford it. Otherwise I love the card.

To answer the question.. Yes, I need it, just like I need a 8900GTX in June 2007.

All this article proves is that FEAR is GPU limited and not CPU limited. Therefore, if you already have a Conroe you're getting the maximum possible FPS out of the card. Also, overclocking this video card actually yields better game performance.

Also, you would have to be half retarded to buy an 8800GTX and run at 1024x768 with no AA or AF applied...either that or a professional gamer who needs max FPS.

FEAR is rather GPU limited in the first place.

It does seem that the drivers might be a tad immature though, as those results are kinda weird.

So... what...
The only buyers that need to be wary are the ones that like low FPS. The 8800 series definitely doesn't deliver in that department.

What's the buyer beware about? I'm not sure I understand your point...

If this is what you're talking about:

However, under high resolution gaming (for example: max/ultra quality and 1280 x 960), the 8800 GPU absolutely does not scale with CPU power AT ALL. I'm talking zilch, nada, nothing.

...that just means that the GPU is the bottleneck, not the CPU... This is also shown by the fact that the fps does increase with an OC to the video card.... Then again, we're talking about a 126 fps "bottleneck" on one of the more intensive games out. Sounds like a serious "problem" to me.

...this thread sounds like a load of FUD to me...

I think the OP got it backwards. Shouldn't he ask, "Do you really want/need to overclock your E6600?"? 😕

I though everyone know this already 😕

If you're interested in getting the best frame rates, the best option is upgrading your video card instead of upgrading your cpu...

ummm... the only thing that article says is that F.E.A.R. is GPU limited and that the 8800GTX limit depends directly on the 8800 GTX's clock speed, and nothing to do with the rest of the system in his rig.

Sounds like a fanboy to me that is mad with not having his/her prefered manufacturer at the top...

Exactly, FEAR runs like crap anyway. They should test it on a game that actually has a good engine.

All the article shows is that FEAR was gpu-limited on last gen cards, and continues to be so on the 8800gtx. If anything, I hope this lays to rest all the "ZOMG, no cpu in existence can feed this beast!!!" posts.

All I'm taking away from that article is that as long as you have a reasonably fast CPU, theres not much need to upgrade or overclock to enhance performance in FEAR above 1280x960.

As has already been said, this is old news.

Agree with everything's that been said. The big picture: F.E.A.R. at almost 130fps @1280x960 res - sounds good to me.

lol, I was about to reply with the same comment. I got a hearty laugh from that.

Which is why I just decided to stop at 3.0Ghz on my E6600. If it can feed the 8800GTX, it can also feed my lowly X1900XTX.

I was reading the article trying to find the big revelation...and all I ended up getting was that FEAR was GPU limited even at low res...is that right?

Interesting limits discovery on 8800GTX
...and the 7900GTX, and the X1950XTX, and the 7800GTX, and the X1800XT...

You are right though, 100+ frames in FEAR is an "interesting" limit.

FEAR is the prime example of what these cards are capable of when drivers and games work together efficiently.

They should have used a more CPU intensive game (i.e. MMORPGs, RTSs, RPGs, etc.)
