Perhaps part of that is the size, but it does seem to make sense that a good component of that expense could be the purchase of good public schools (and low crime and safe middle class and upper middle class neighborhoods).

Fast forward to about 38:18 and listen up until about 40:30. It mentions the following studies:

1. When looking at Boston suburbs, houses in 2 areas that were otherwise equal saw a difference in tens of thousands of dollars in housing prices because one area's 3rd grade reading scores were 5 points higher than another one.

2. A survey in San Diego indicated that parents would rather live near a toxic dump than an area with an underperforming school.

men however make 800 dollars less than their father 30 years ago

but did our fathers live in their own apartment, drive a lexus, have a computer ipod, 50" lcd, PS3, etc?

families in 1970 were putting away 11% of income
families today are putting away -1%

but did families in 1970 have 401ks, IRAs, etc? does that -1% "savings rate" count retirement accounts?

in 1970 families carried 1.4% revolving debt
today carry 15% revolving debt

isn't that a reflection of liquidity and earnings power?

It doesn't mean these people are stupid home buyers. You get more than just the schools, you live in a richer area which comes with benefits such as lower crime.

At the gym tonight I saw the forbes 400 list. Do you know who occupies positions 4,5,6,7? Waltons.
link

It's no secret that walmart is a hole its workers with poor wages and, most telling of all the numbers, incredibly high turnover rates, but to have these folk dominate near the top of the forbes 400 while their stores have, many believe, an injurious effect on the middle class (again no secret that a Walmart store opening can destroy many smaller stores in the immediate area), it simply doesn't sit right with me.

Listen to that segment in the video - they already controlled for the other factors such as crime. The 2 regions were equivalent in a number of other measures.

Who are those that dictate what items are considered a necessity?

Also, what does this mean

Whereas a generation ago a single income family would have 50% of their income dedicated to 'fixed costs' ---- today, 75% of a two-income families' cash goes to 'fixed costs'. The family MUST have a second income to make ends meet.

I really would like to meet the person who sets the guidelines for making ends meet.

Just taking a wager I bet the following:

Houses are 25% larger.
Appliances include computer, tv, mp3 players etc... or some crazy set amount for a washer/dryer.
Standard of living has increased.
Like expectancy has increased.
Retirement income has increased.
People are purchasing more cars.
People are having less amount of children then ever before.

Hmmm............

It debunks some much of your belief that people are living to excess instead of the reality of the modern family in the USA is struggling to keep its miserable head above water, and now the risks of actually creating a reproductive family are greater then being a DINK, a GAY/LESBIAN COUPLE or a HANDSOLO by some 100% .

It's long but I found it informative.

Thank you for posting a link to the lecture. I am glad that at least one ivory tower intellectual is speaking up for the middle class. I wish that the video had included the Q&A.

She confirmed something that I have suspected for a while. It's true that the prices of consumer goods--electronics and appliances--have decreased, however, the prices of expensive non-optional items such as health care and housing have increased. This issue comes up often in debates about the status of the middle class today where some right-wing free market dogmatist nutjob will argue that the middle class and lower class are better off today than before because the prices for consumers goods have decreased.

I also liked the part where she discussed what people perceive as being required to enter the middle class today--college education. However, she should mention that the nature of college education itself has changed and that today it is no longer a guarantor of middle class status (however, it is much more expensive) and that obtaining college education also comes with the great risk of suffering huge amounts of student loan debt that you cannot repay. Because our nation has offshored formerly middle class manufacturing jobs and because the overall state of the economy is one of malaise, in the past several decades people have flooded into the nation's colleges and universities which dramatically increases the competition for college-education-requiring middle class jobs and thus dramatically decreases the probability of career success. That decreased probability of career success (the attainment of a secure middle class lifestyle) has created an Education Arms Race where more and more people obtain advanced degrees and professional degrees in the hopes of further distinguishing themselves from people with mere bachelors degrees. Of course, unsurprisingly, the chances of career success for people with advanced and professional degrees has also decreased substantially. In Professor Warren's own field, law, about two or three times more lawyers are produced each year than what the employment market can absorb, which means that about half of those new law school graduates cannot find work in their fields yet have tremendous amounts of student loan debt. I wish that Professor Warren would mention that today, obtaining a college education is no guarantee of being able to enter the middle class and that college education now carries with it a tremendous amount of financial risk.

They never speak of the longevity or quality of those goods which have gotten cheaper however.
What market should those student aim at, if not law? I mean hey those students are focusing on a potential income stream, what happened to the "law" of supply and demand when it comes to legal professionals earnings- over supply=less earnings/more competition?
At lest she is making facts aware to all now, which should of happened 15 year ago. As the raygun, thatcher deregulation and privatizations took effect on society.
when do we see some justice from the law frat? all law, facts and legal jargon, but no ground zero justice! Large explicative words which mean very little change, leaving the middle class people out of a just result.

Maybe you should watch the video first before spouting your garbage. She controls for all of that, we actually spend less money today than we did 30 years ago on 95% of that list.

Actually you look like an idiot, your non salary job is probably due to you lack of education or being retarded when growing up. Factor in the not saving for retirement is another laughable choice.

Can you at least use spell check next time.

Let's see here:

Food Consumption

HDI Report

100 yeas ago in America

1906:

  • The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years.
Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.
There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved roads.
Eighteen percent of households in the U.S. had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

So, can someone please tell me who dictates what is needed vs. luxury items.

Going to 80% of the population having Internet... Internet for United States

The average American (US) has 2.8 TV's.... TV for United States How many people have Cable? According to Ipsos survey, 51% have cable TV.

The average American (US) has 2 cars per household.... Cars in the United States

I do not feel like getting into cell phone plans, video game consoles, alchohol consumption, drug use or many of the other strange things we deem as a necessity.

I'm not sure why your posting all those statistics from turn of the century, her lecture compared families from the earlier 70s to 2006-2007 I believe. She also talked about 2 cars per household, cell phones, electronics, alcohol and so forth.

To answer your question about need vs. luxury I don't think anyone dictates whats a need vs. a luxury item officially.

sure houses are slightly larger. but the price has shot up far far more then it should have over the years.

standard of living has increased? i disagree.

the numbers do not agree with you on retirement.

i blame the problem on families having 2 workers. when it first started the extra income was well extra. now you NEED 2 incoms ot have the same standard of living that your parents had.
