Interesting how E3 is showing that yet again Nintendo leads the pack.

Ok so let's get something out-of-the-way first. Nintendo sucks at building beefy polygon crunching eye popping gaming consoles. But time and time again they have shown they excel where it really matters. They know how to make games FUN. And at the end of the day what matters is how much fun you have playing any system or game. Now I know that the Xbox 360 and PS3 probably still have more fans ou there than the Wii (at least amongst the hardcore coming community). But I have to say that I've had more fun playing the Wii and Nintendo DS than either of the other system or the PSP. Sure many of the games are childish in nature and lack the stunning visuals of the big games on the other systems, but I've truly had more fun playing on the Wii and DS. Maybe it's just a sign of the type of gamer I am but I think Nintendo knows better how to make a system just plain old fun! Everyone laughed when the Wii was released but years latter and it's still going very strong. The DS has actually turned out to be my favourite "console" of all. Something about the best games on the DS just perfectly combine the fusion of wonderful art direction and great handheld fun. Some of the best games are actually still based on 2D sprites! And of course the art direction in Nintendo's flagship franchises more than makes up for the lack of polygons. SMG2 is a wonder to play and is beautiful looking! From the first little tidbits of info coming out of E3 it seems they have yet another winner on their hands with the 3DS. And I just have to lol at both MS and Sony playing catchup with Project Natal and the PS3 motion controller.

Anyone agree?

It's all down to the demographics.

Nintendo knows that it can't compete with PS3 and 360 in pure power, and thus have practically created a new demographic of these casual gamers. They've done very well at creating and maintaining this demographic as well.

That's not to say that either company can't cross polinate their titles. I also wouldn't say that MS and Sony are "playing catchup." They realise Nintendo has the market on motion controls and the like and slowly bringing it in. No everyone succumbs to gimmicks.

Well the thing is that the motion controls were part of the Wii from the beginning. For MS and PS3 they will be accessories. Accessories have historically fared horribly in the console market. The market is littered with the bones of accessory controllers. Guns, motion controls, gloves, head mounted displays, you name it none have done very well. Unless it's part of the base system. I don't see why these will be any different.

Nintendo is smart, they can keep costs down on each unit by not giving it as much power as the others making their console cheaper and selling a ton of them. Go nintendo

It wasn't that they couldn't compete, they just realized it was silly to even try. Heck, even the previous generation juggernaut, Sony, came close to falling victim to the arms race when they were losing $300 when selling a $600 PS3. The PS1 and PS2 were the weakest systems of their generations, yet each was the best selling...somehow Sony lost sight of that, or maybe they just didn't even realize it, but Nintendo certainly did.

i skipped through the ubisoft and nintendo g4 coverage, the nintendo stuff was more interesting to see, i wonder what tech the 3d screen is using. the ubisoft one was boring, the usual suspects of fps games and stuff thats not interesting to watch in presentation, project natal aerobics or whatever was meh, it was only slightly interesting to see jade raymond at the end, mostly that she was clearly trying to tone down her look, almost no makeup.

Yeah, to each his own of course, but Nintendo's conference made me finally decide to sell my Wii, which I haven't played in over a year and a half. Their entire conference was pathetic. They're nothing but a gimmick company now. Don't get me wrong, it certainly works for them, but it doesn't for me.

Goodbye, Nintendo. You were my first, and I appreciate you for that.

I disagree with you 100%. Nintendo's conference was by far the worst. It's not because the Wii is graphically inferior or anything, it's because their games just don't look fun and their motion controls, IMO, suck. I'm just not attracted to the cartoony and kid-friendly vibe oozing out of everything they make these days.

I'm no longer in their target audience. Best of luck to them.

Really? I guess I can understand if none of the games appeal to you, but Microsoft introduced nothing to us other than exactly what you are complaining about. The bulk of the conference was spent on Kinect. Nintendo and Sony were pretty strong by contrast with a few surprises and footage of previously unseen new games.

eh based strictly on E3, i'd say that Sony's conference was by far the best (entertaining wise).

none of them really wowed me with any new technology. i dont give a shit about handhelds, although the technology behind the 3DS i'm interested in, and how it actually looks. nintendo showing donkey kong country however did get me pretty excited, and i may pick up a wii again before that comes out. the first one on SNES is one of my favorite games ever.

the zelda presentation is probsably the biggest public fail i've ever seen from nintendo ever. blaming it on 'wireless interference' is a fucking joke, because if they knew that would be an issue they could have made an announcement early on. funny how it didn't interfere with any other demos that were given.

in general im kind of tired of the whole mini-game phenom on wii, and getting tired of rehashing their nintendo characters.

i think the PSMove is by far the most interesting as far as motion controls go, because it looks A LOT more 1 to 1 than any of the other, and a lot more responsive.

At the end of the day, Nintendo's announcement of a new Kirby and Donkey Kong Country had me more stoked than anything else I've seen. Both looked great and look like they're going to be a blast. WiiParty will appeal to the soccer moms and big families, and that's fine, bit N had a lot of core gamer titles in their lineup, like Goldeneye, Golden Sun, Zelda, and Dragon Quest 9, almost all of them due out this year. While Sony and Microsoft pretty much only brought Kinect/PS Move games and a few sequels to existing IPs, Nintendo's entire conference was about the games I love and look forward to.

As someone who loves the game, not the hardware, I gotta say Nintendo swept up in the Big 3 this year, hands down.

I don't even own a Wii or DS anymore, but I think nintendo won by a long shot.

Why?
Because they're smart and catered to my nostalgia for DKC and Kirby. Those two games alone make me want to rebuy the Wii. I'm very interested in the 3DS because I'm a sucker for new hardware. I'm not sold on the 3D, but I do want to try it.

Don't get me wrong, Sony had excellent conference as well. Sorcery looked pretty good with the Move. I mean, I'm not happy with motion controls, but frankly Sony's solution looks the most robust out of the 3. Twisted Metal looks alright and will probably be a huge hit.

I don't know. In general, I'm sick and tired of all these shooters. Killzone 3, Halo Reach, Gears 3, COD Black Ops, MOH, etc. All of it seems like it's just more of the same old junk over and over again. The shooter genre is reaching the point of saturation that sports games have. We don't need this many shooters when none of them really differentiate themselves from their previous edition. Sadly, all these games (along with sports games) are cash cows and will spur little innovation from here on out.

From what I've seen, Zelda controlled much better when the public got to test it out.

I mean, I know every company likes their wireless stuff now, but they need to be using wired controllers when they demo this stuff so there's no excuses.

I know nintendo doesn't have a wired Wii controller, but they should create a one-off controller that plugs into the wii just for these demonstrations. It's inexcusable to blame your shortcomings on wireless interference on a national stage (you too apple).

I'm going to disagree that this conference is showing yet again that Nintendo leads the pack. The previous two conferences were dreadfully atrocious and had many thinking Nintendo was going down the tubes because of their focus on exercise games and silly stuff like the vitality sensor and Wii Music.

However, they came out much stronger this year by bringing back classic characters that haven't been seen this gen at all and introducing what looks to be a powerful handheld that just so happens to do 3D too.

The only other on-stage demo of a Wii game was Epic Mickey and it didn't have the same kind of control scheme as Zelda so it's hard to say. Everything else was videos. By all accounts, none of the problems that Miyamoto experienced were present at the demo booths.

I've got two Good, Bad, Ugly, and Missing articles up on Microsoft and Nintendo's press conferences if anyone wants to bother to read them. I would have had Sony already but the power went out in my neighborhood right after I finished the Nintendo one. My one initial thought - too much talking.

I really want to play SMG 1 and 2 but I know I'd immediately want to sell the wii right after that. Nothing in Nintendo's conference intrigued me.

Interesting that you think Nintendo led the pack, when in my mind Sony was better.

i thought the wand was just lame. if they build games expecting a single hand input i just don't see that working, you need two controllers to do anything really useful, and even then its sorta bs. since they are going for the casual gamer its probably going to be a lot of one hand control nonsense.

Probably, but at least the wand pretty much mimics the Wii controls exactly. So now you can get do the stuff Wii does with the graphical prowess of the PS3. Of course you won't see it utilized very well as it seems like only Nintendo can do it right, but the tech is at least there.

I was more excited about Twisted Metal than anything though. Hearing about it almost made me mess my pantaloons :awe:

I bought a Wii when Super Smash Brawl came out. Played it, it was fun, but online was terrible.

And then I sold the Wii.

Everything else for the system sucks.

Me too, but I'm a little worried about how convoluted some of the game modes will be. I mean... capture the faction leader, take him back to your missle base, keep him there for a while and defend, launch missle, protect missle, hit target... and do this 3 times? Wow.

I mean, it sounds fun, but we all know everyone will gravitate to deathmatch style games anyway.

I don't really judge the conferences by surprises, just by what intrigues me. Besides, you harshing on Microsoft for having a Kinect-heavy show is the same reason I hated Nintendo's show. Each respective conference just didn't appeal to us. You didn't like Kinect and the seemingly yearly GoW/Halo update, I didn't like the announcement of even more mini-games and kid-friendly fare.

Plus, the showing of the 3DS was immensely disappointing now that I've have time to reflect. Yet another DS with a new gimmick is what it appears to be, to me, at this point. Another in a line of incremental upgrades. I don't really get the feeling that the 3DS is a true hardware sequel, which is what I was wanting. Sure, the 3D screen and seemingly improved graphics are promising, but they didn't really tell us anything. Do they have playable demos on the E3 floor? If so, I'd be interested in hearing some impressions, but if not, then the announcement of it was lackluster and devoid of really much information at all. I'm still interested in seeing one in person, but I was disappointed.

If I had to pick a favorite, I'd easily pick Sony.

yes like the wii, but without the second control, you need two hands worth of controls for games worth bothering with. its like half a wii control.

I thought there was a secondary attachment like the wii nunchuck? Seems almost exactly like the Wii to me. Maybe I just don't get what you mean.
