well, he belonged to some german organization which basically was like a little "SS Club"

yea, I read about it in Charles Lindbergh's biography, mentioned how both ford and lindbergh went over to germany before wwII and accepted honors.

I learned in grade school that Ford used modern manufacturing methods to produce an inexpensive product. I later read that he used violence and spies to control his labor force.

Yes it did suck. In grade school I was also taught that Ford paid his labor force enough so they could afford to buy his product. I did not include that in my earlier post because the book or books I read later about Ford disputed the image of Ford as a friend of labor.

That's because they generally try to avoid suppositions and speculations in your typical high school history books, like the accusation that "Henry Ford was a Nazi."

Ford was a bigot, to be sure, but there is no support to the assertion he "held the same beliefs" as the Nazi's. By that standard, Larry Alan Thorne was also a Nazi because he disdained the Russians enough to join the German SS so he could continue fighting the Russian communists. Thorne later enlisted in the US Army to fight against communists. A native of Finland, Thorne is a national hero there and his US military service was the basis for the character played by John Wayne in "The Green Berets".

To my knowledge, Ford did not write any sentiments or statements which might reasonably be interpreted as advocating or condoning mass-murder and extermination of the Jews. Jews have been marginalized and treated as second class citizens, though not rounded up for mass slaughter, by various other countries for hundreds of years.

During our own struggle with slavery, many abolitionists were vigorously opposed to slavery and brutality towards blacks, but at the same time, did not think of them as their equals. Being a bigot doesn't invariably make one a champion of mass murder.

Ford was awarded a GERMAN medal, not a "Nazi" medal. Granted, it was awarded by him to the Nazis, which almost makes it as good as a Nazi medal, but not quite. The medal was awarded in 1938, and was in return for Ford's support of the rise of the Nationalist Socialist party during the late 1920s and early 1930's. Jews would not be targeted for genocide until the same year.

From 1933, when the first SS concentration camp was established, unti 1938, Jews did not enter these camps unless they were incidentally among the political groups opposed to the Nationalist Socialist party. The camps were initially used exclusively for the detention of political prisoners and opposition groups, namely socialist democrats and communists.

Like Thorne, Ford supported the Nationalist Socialist party because he hated communists, who during the Weimar Republic years were rabidly anticapitalist. Ford saw this as a threat to his business interests not only in Germany but Europe in general. While Ford may have held anti-semitic views, it appears this was merely incidental or at worst secondary to his hatred of communists as the motivation behind his backing of the Nazi party ala the old addage "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".

One of my Drill Sergeants worked with Larry Thorne in the early 60s in 'Nam. Said he was one helluva soldier. Also indicated that Thorne was in a unit in WWII that continued fighting the Russians for like a week after the German surrender.

That is true. Also it must be noted that the Nazis at first did not plan to kill the jews but rather wanted to deport them (to madagaskar). Only when the tide of war turned against them they resorted to killing the jews.
(Which in my opinion makes it even more sickening and the killers more crazy because they must have known that if they loose the war they will have to stand up for their atrocities.)
