One of the arguments I have constantly heard as to why people don't run SETI or some other DC project is that they are afraid it will kill their HD prematurely. Well, my current machine is running with a HD that is several years old now. It is finally starting to give up the ghost. In fact, more often than not it takes multiple restarts to get it to run any length of time without freezing.
One of the things I was doing in an attempt to make things a bit easier on the HD was shutting off SETI. Hey, HEY put those baseball bats down!
Anyway, I discovered that having SETI writing to the HD on a regular basis is actually helping prevent freeze-ups as I limp my machine along until I can get the components to upgrade it.
Who'da thunk it?
If you're wondering what I am going to upgrade to, I am going to get an Athlon 64, which will continue running SETI Classic for the TeAm up until Classic gets retired in favor of BOINC.
