Interesting Happenings With SETI Classic...

One of the arguments I have constantly heard as to why people don't run SETI or some other DC project is that they are afraid it will kill their HD prematurely. Well, my current machine is running with a HD that is several years old now. It is finally starting to give up the ghost. In fact, more often than not it takes multiple restarts to get it to run any length of time without freezing.

One of the things I was doing in an attempt to make things a bit easier on the HD was shutting off SETI. Hey, HEY put those baseball bats down! ;) Anyway, I discovered that having SETI writing to the HD on a regular basis is actually helping prevent freeze-ups as I limp my machine along until I can get the components to upgrade it.

Who'da thunk it? :p

If you're wondering what I am going to upgrade to, I am going to get an Athlon 64, which will continue running SETI Classic for the TeAm up until Classic gets retired in favor of BOINC.

Well, I have had zero freeze-ups since I started leaving SETI@Home on. I have only had to restart my computer once so I could reconnect to the 'Net, when a phone call screwed up my DSL connection. :)

Just ordered my Athlon64 3500+ too, it ought to scream for the remainder of SETI@Home Classic. :D

No but it'll still scream anyway :D

Btw I guess SETI writing to the HDD is keeping it awake ;)

That is what seems to be happening. I thought I would shut SETI off to keep from taxing my HD, as it was obviously in its final stages of life. When I do that, it will lock up in a few minutes. If I leave SETI running, it just keeps going like the Energizer bunny.

Well, while SETI@Home may have been good for my HD, Find-A-Drug killed my machine when I was tinkering with it. It was on the verge of death anyway. Turns out the motherboard I got for my Athlon64 may be bad though, so I am offline for at least a week. :(
