Interesting read.

"But then again, with NVIDIA backing Doom 3, ATi needed SOMETHING. Wanna take bets on who gets Quake 4 or Unreal Tournament 2005? Hopefully no one."

Won't Quake be running a doom3 engine?

Someone should send this as a guideline to Gabe:

"We have been planning to put together a proper pre-release of Doom for benchmarking purposes, but we have just been too busy with actual game completion. The executable and data that is being shown was effectively lifted at a random point in the development process, and shows some obvious issues with playback, but we believe it to be a fair and unbiased data point? We were not happy with the demo that Nvidia prepared, so we recorded a new one while they were here today. This is an important point -- while I'm sure Nvidia did extensive testing, and knew that their card was going to come out comfortably ahead with the demo they prepared, right now, they don't actually know if the demo that we recorded for them puts them in the best light. Rather nervy of them, actually."

that's nonsense. There can be little doubt that nVidia knew full well that the FX and 6800 series would dominate, particularly given the history of openGL and ATI; not to mention the backseat they had in D3 development.
Valve alone helped destroy FX prospects. though it is true that the 9800 line crushed the FX in DX9 usage in HL2, the game was still to be regarded as a future title to be released at the advent of next generation parts (and it seems that the 6800s do just fine in HL2).
Even so, the current HL2 stress test shows 9800 domination over the FX series in full DX 9.0, just as the earlier benchies demonstrated a year ago.

All I know if that 9/10 reviews show the GT besting the Pro in 99% of the HL2 benchies.

So the theory that Gabe programmed for ATI doesnt seem to be holding water.

But the real issue is these biased sites that post bogus benchmarks.

Forgive me if I dont believe the things you post when every other website shows different.

And the ATI banners on your front page do not help the issue either.

I thought it was just the FX lines of cards that were a bit crippled in DX9, while the new 6800 cards run just fine.

I have to question if this guy is completely full of sh!t, or just mildly retarded-

The next big ?game experience? definer was probably the CD-ROM. The simultaneous evolution of ?FMV Gaming? coupled with huge hits like Doom and Quake suddenly put both the CD-ROM and the CPU at the center of the gaming picture with one required to hold the video and the other required to play it. Then, of course, came 3dfx with the Voodoo 1, and gaming changed again.

We may be on the cusp of a new sea change in gaming, but unlike all the others I?m not sure this one is a positive change. With the launch of Doom 3 two weeks ago and Half Life 2 (supposedly) going gold in roughly a week it looks as though we?re entering a new era of ?Optimized? Gaming where hardware and software manufacturers work hand-in-glove to ensure titles are absolutely optimized for their own technology.

Uhhh, yeah. There is going to be a wave of heavily optimized games that will significantly favor one vendor, it will be built around a technology called "Glide" and it's going to start up about seven years ago..... He even mentions Glide in this yet fails to make the connection that going too heavy in terms of IHV optimizations has already been done and failed, and most devs know this.

With the exception of Newell, no developer is going to bend over backwards to try and make one piece of hardware look better then the other and Newell likely only did it for the enormous amounts of cash ATi put in front of him. Carmack handed the world his blueprint for what would make D3 scream along four years ago, some IHVs simply decided to follow it closer then others. Sweeney, like Carmack, is letting everyone know well in advance what his next engine is going to need, and between JC and TS you tend to have the overwhelming majority of the industry following along.

Heh, and it is funny to note ATI will be doing the SM3.0\32FP route inline with TS's suggestions.
