Interesting Ebay situation

So I bought a pair of car subwoofers on ebay. Advertised as new, unopened, never used, etc. I paid in full via Paypal, and got the UPS shipping notifications (two of them) in my email. I guess they were shipped separately, which is fine.

Anyways, here is the problem...I saw that the total ship weight for each box is listed on the shipping notifications as 8.0 lbs. I thought this seemed a bit light for the caliber of speakers that I bought... so, I looked up the subwoofer spec sheet on the manufacturer's website. Sure enough, the gross weight for each speaker is listed there on the spec sheet as 14.4 lbs each!? And that isn't even including packaging materials!! WTF? :|

The thing is, the ship notifications only say "Billing Information Received" - it's too soon to check on their actual progress. Could this mean that the seller supplied the information to UPS about the packages and they haven't verified the weight of each yet? Should I wait and see if this is just an honest mistake that hasn't yet been corrected, or contact the seller and ask what's up?

I don't really want to contact him yet, as I'd rather not tip my hand and give him a chance to empty his paypal and bail with my money. Reason being, I think the evidence I would have that I was shipped the wrong item is pretty damning to him in the event it comes down to an Ebay / Paypal dispute.

What do you all think?

He lied about shipping weight to save money on shipping. He is more honest than I am. I have never shipped anything that weighed more than 1 pound as far as UPS is concerned.

Hmm, interesting...so UPS doesn't verify weight, and just takes the shipper's word for it? Everything I've ever shipped was weighed out and labeled right in front of me at the counter...but I'm not a business with lots of shipments to make and a UPS account, either. I guess it's different in those situations?

At this point you should really be thinking about what you are going to do with 8lbs of old Reader's Digests and LA Times. Maybe a brick......so many things to consider.

Just wait a week and the guy will ask you to send a payment to Nigeria and cancel how you paid him since for some reason it's not working. ;)

Scheduled delivery is about a week from now. If it isn't what it's supposed to be, I'll post pics of the actual contents, just before going after the seller with both barrels. You can bet I'm going to weigh each one separately, even if they do "look" right, regardless...

The same happens with FedEx.

I guess the weight in the shipping documents - but the actual weight gets logged at shipping time for billing.
