Interesting details about X-Men origins: Wolverine game

Apparently, Raven Software was already working on a Wolverine game prior to the game becoming a movie tie-in. In fact, according to Destructoid, the game's violence might actually be misleading to movie-goers. There is actually more violence in the Wolverine game than in the movie with dismemberment and gore.

Additionally, Wolverine is rendered in layers with a destructible shirt, destructible skin, and then his skeleton. So, just like in the comics, Wolverine can have the crap torn out of him and you'll see the wounds and holes heal themselves over time.

Notice I didn't say destructible pants? There's a reason for that (via MTV Multiplayer).

As far as the pants go, if you notice his shirt totally gets all ripped up. Well, we used to have it where it was just this [crotch area] ? we call it a ?no-zone? [area that doesn't get torn away]. But then seriously, within five minutes, Wolverine?s just walking around in daisy dukes and it just looked weird. So we?re like, you know what dude, let?s just move the no-zone down to here [the calf area] and within five minutes, it looked like he had on clam diggers or capri pants. So we made it so that the pants actually don?t get ripped away because it looked too strange. We actually went through a ton of iterations of that. It was pretty funny.?

All the previews I've read have been in the "I'm surprised this isn't a crappy movie license game" vein so it may be one to keep an eye on.

That is certainly more plausible than someone managing to make a decent movie tie-in game from scratch. Joystiq keeps mentioning how this actually seems like a good game, and now it makes a little more sense. I shall remain skeptical, however.

A game that's technically a movie tie-in being good? This will destroy the space time continuum as we know it!

Ars confirms how different the movie is from the game violence wise.

A soldier stalks Wolverine, who stands on the other side of a cement wall. They're both listening to the wall, trying to sense the movements of the other. Wolverine puts his fist against the wall, pointing at the soldier's head. The claws come out, slicing through the cement and running through the man's head at three points. There is blood. The man twitches. Logan "sheaths those claws" and the man drops dead. The camera doesn't pull away.

In another scene, Wolverine leaps onto a helicopter, punches through the glass, drags the pilot out, and holds his head up to the spinning blades with predictably wet results. We see a multi-stage fight against a Sentinel, part of which happens in mid-air. The Sentinel crashes, and Wolverine puts his arms forward in a Superman pose and then slams through the robot's head like a bullet. The resulting crater looks just like the panel of a comic book.

...

Even cooler is that his healing factor is handled both as a game mechanic?this is the rare game where regenerative health makes sense?but also graphically. As Wolverine gets shot up you see blood on his clothes, then gashes in his skin, and then you can begin to see the adamantium skeleton underneath. If he gets really beaten up, you might see clean through his body in places. Don't worry: take out the threat and just wait. You'll watch his skin grow back and his wounds close in real time.

Later, I was able to play the game myself. The controls are intuitive, the battles intense. When your claws hit an arm, the arm comes off. To counteract the guns of your enemies, you have a targeted lunge move where Wolverine pounces on an enemy, claws out, and knocks him to the ground. There you can basically lay the chest open, blood and gristle flying this way and that. There are only a few moves that feel too "video gamey," such as a spinning attack where Logan begins to look like a helicopter.

...

I had very few hopes for the game when I entered the meeting, but I left excited about the upcoming title. It's possible all this enthusiasm will be dulled by the full release?and we've been promised a review sample so we'll be able to give you all the dirt?but on the surface this looks like what a Wolverine game should be. I asked what other character Raven would like to handle next.

May contain mild Spoilers.

Just finished playing it on normal, and it was a good time.

Fun games I've played, with elements that made this one feel familiar quickly include: God of War, Conan, Hulk:UD, Spiderman: Friend or Foe, and just a hint of Prince of Persia.

I played the hell out of Conan on PS3, and the combat is very similar, especially the timed blocks and counters, gore, and dismemberments. The platforming and puzzle solving are simple. and the timing is a little forgiving, at least on normal anyways.

Boss battles (with the exception of the last segment of the Blood Pool fight) are very easy to figure out. I beat all of them the first go thanks to Wolvie's healing factor, which I augmented through finding and equipping power ups. Are the bosses boring, yeah, pretty much, same goes for mini-bosses, but at least the fights weren't frustrating. Until the last part with Dead Pool, took me a good number of tries, to put everything together long enough to take him down. Because he regenerates just like you do. He has a "Ohhh! that is some serious bullshit right there!" power he uses at the end too.

The power ups are cool, in that you can change which you want equipped anytime you want. That lets you decide which attributes you want to enhance and level the fastest. I found all of 3 for experience, equipped it, and was able to level up twice in just 1 battle royal.

I unlocked 2 of the 4 challenge modes, so I'll have to see how fun those are next. Also SPOILER ALERT: ---

There are WoW, Portal, and Lost easter eggs I need to find in game too.

I haven't even looked at this game as I was sure it was a crappy movie tie in. Need I actually look at it now?

Try out the demo? I actually enjoyed it. I think the major complaints from reading around the reviews were that the boss fights can get repetitive and it can be glitchy in spots towards the end. But, it's a pretty good/fun game overall.

This game gets a partial pass on being a movie tie-in because it was in development as a stand alone Wolverine game before it became a movie tie-in.
