Interesting cold boot issue.

Ok, so I've had this build together and running for about a month. Everything is stock. Passes 12+ hours of Prime95 small FFTs and all the memory has passed at least 5 passes of memtest both individually and together. System seems completely stable whether surfing the net or playing games.

Issue:
After power has been disconnected, either at the back of the machine or further down the power chain, the machine will not fully boot on the first try. It passes post and then about 2 secs into the Win 8.1 start up logo it just powers off completely. Pressing the power again results in a clean boot. Like nothing ever happened. If I restart or shutdown the machine from windows it works flawlessly. This only happens the first boot after complete power loss. Any ideas? It doesn't seem to be affecting anything, its just annoying.

It's the "training" process.
With z87..It's kind of the norm.
There may be a 3rd option where it will save your settings, see if there is.
(normal,fast boot,X)

Settings are:

Disabled (Current)
Fast - Disables USB storage boot
Ultra Fast - Boots straight to windows, requires CMOS reset to enter BIOS

If this is normal for z87 boards, leaving it as is won't be a big issue long term as I usually leave the system running 24/7.

the old dual post/boot thingy. This started back in the P35 chipset days. I guess every Intel chipset since then does it on a really cold boot. (ie. standby power removed at the psu)

Mine doesn't. All my Optiplexes have had Intel chipsets (one I am on, Q57), and not one of them has ever done this. And, when I shut a system down, I then unplug the surge strip from the wall.

So cold boot is my default.

Maybe it only does it if you are overclocked in the BIOS? I know that the P35 chipset does it to set the chipset strap. There were BIOS upgrades for various boards so that it would only do the double-post once, if standby power was removed, otherwise it wouldn't need to do it.
