This might be old, but I just came across it and found it interesting...

CR

Looks deceivingly like two lists. Imports on the left, domestics on the right.

Why bother with the fancy table? Just say

Imports = CR GOOD BETS

Domestics = RELIABILITY RISKS

Geo Prism = Toyota Corolla
Escort/Tracer = Mazda Protege

only difference is its looks. the drivetrain of these cars are all foreign.

In the long run I'll stick with domestics except GM....and have money in the bank. If your beloved import does have problems and it will, you will pay up the BUTT for repairs.

I'll but AMERICAN!

BTW, I was a Consumer Reports subscriber for years. Their reports are lousy and circumspect imho.

More like the other way around. There has yet to be a Ford based off a Mazda platform. The Protege debuted in 1990, based off the now defunct 323 platform. The Escort has been around a lot longer than 12 years. (Err it was anyway)

Not so! When the body style changed in '91 ??? they went to the Mazda design....Been a very good car ever since and the ZX2 is the last.....and best!

I think these days it matters more where a car was designed more than where it's made.

So many American cars have imported parts that at what point are they different than an Import?

Cars are all hit and miss.. I know some people with Intrepids that dislike them, but 2 of my good friends' parents have Intrepids and one of the dads says it's the best car he's ever owned, the other guy simply says he likes it because it's zero problems. you hear the same thing from time to time about Imports.. I hate inconsistency... some people even think Nissan/Toyota are crappy for reliability. i don't see that.. I've had 2 Chryslers now and both have been great cars for me, my old one was fabulous, cheap to run, bought it cheap, lasted the whole time i had it with minimal problems, these review thingies that they put out really do kinda suck....

I don't think the costs of maintaining imports is that much more than domestics. And repairs may be more, but most domestics break down more often, so it is actually better to invest in the import, imo.

There has yet to be a Ford based off a Mazda platform. I disagree.When the Ford Probe came out I believe it was based on the Mazda 626.

Why don't those turds have a real car represented for domestics? Would they rather have their readers cramped like sardines, and lives endangered in econo-dwarf-mobiles?

That's funny, I see a Mercedes on the bad list too.

Another reason why I never put much value in CR. If you have any doubts about whether they understand the things they review, just go take a peek at their high-tech and computer section and you'll laugh your butt off.

Give me a 'risky' nice big Mercedes or Trailblazer any day over some cramped sardine crappy econobox junker like most of the ones listed on the left.

Because it's a reliability rating not a comfort and safety rating. I'll take those "turds" ratings over any other, any day of the week. Especially over the ones you have sift through the advertising to get to.:):)

Would like to see a similar report on dealer service and after warranty maintance with cost analysis. I've never had a good experience with a dealer with FORD dealers among the worst. :disgust:

Consumer Reports has ALWAYS pissed me off, not because of their tests or methods, but because of what they neglect to test! When I was shopping for riding mowers, computers (back in '92), coffee makers... you name it, they never had a well rounded representation of selections.

I've read their car reports in the past, and could easily hear their bias toward "ecology friendly" small cars. MSN gives the RWD, V8 Mercury 5 out of 5 rating. Edmunds gives it 8 out of 10. Auto Reports says it's excellent. Woman Motorist says, ...one of Ford's best kept secrets... yet, Consumer Reports neglects to even test them! Basically, CR SUCKS!

Ornery- I will agree that the scope of CR's reports is frustrating, but you must remember this is a non-profit organization. They do not receive test models from manufacturers. It is simply not possible for them to test every model of every product. I trust their reports above all others because they buy off the shelf, they have no advertising and they have a limit on how much any one person or organization is allowed to donate to them (I think it is $5K). I place no trust in an organization that has a rating of something on one page and a full page advertisement of it on the next.
