If you're rich you hire people to hack for you. Why bother doing it yourself when it's pocket change to hire some guy to do it for you?

Don't the famous ones get hired by the big companies after getting out of prison?

Obviously you didn't bother to look at the article. The question the article was answering is why hackers don't make themselves rich based on their efforts not why rich people don't hack.

All I saw was something about virus writers. It's kind of hard to market yourself as a "hacker for hire" and hope to make big $$ off of it.

Because most of them are zit-faced, script using, linux zealot, losers?

Many hackers are making money. Look at kimble.org, which is the most known example.
Most hackers are hobbiests, and really don't want to ruin that love by wasting time im bullsh!t corporate america.
Most of them know better then to conform.

Remember kids, MONEY ISN'T EVERYTHING!

Accepted definition? No ... Some argue that hackers are actually just computer programmers and that crackers are the ones that break into computers. Others, who are less anal, believe that hackers are the ones who break into computers ... Whatever floats your boat.

SammySon, any other Communist propaganda quotes you have for us today?

Accepted, probably not, but proper yes. A hacker does not necessarily break into machines. That would be a cracker. Thanks to the media and other morons, the term hacker has become a bad thing.

Proper is only what is accepted. Just because of hardcore linux zealots over at /. insist that a hacker is just a programmer, doesn't make it right. Because of disputes like this, there are people who study 8+ years focusing only on linguistics--a bunch of linux zealots aren't the ones who create the true meaning and connotation of a word.

Who mentioned linux zealots at slashdot? Not I. Ask many of the old school hackers. Talk to some of today's hackers. See what they say. Just because some moron said hacker when that was not the appropriate word does nto mean the definition has changed, even though the connotation has been changed by the ignorant.
