FBI Investigates Deep Throat

What I thought was interesting was the quotes here
Today we can't imagine authorities at any level of government ? local, state or federal ? being involved in obscenity prosecutions of this kind," said Mark Weiner, a constitutional law professor and legal historian at Rutgers-Newark School of Law. "The story of 'Deep Throat' is the story of the last gasp of the forces lined up against the cultural and sexual revolution and it is the advent of the entry of pornography into the mainstream."

Didn't Tipper Gore go on a crusade to outlaw some albums forcing the parental restrictions?

Weren't some rap albums banned in some locations due to lyrics?

Are we that forgetful?

This was the 90's

Tipper Gore was behind the "Parental Advisory" stickers on albums, which date from the mid-80s.

As far as the banned rap albums, the most memorable one would probably be 2 Live Crew's best known work.

This article is a great reminder of how vigilant we must be to protect free speech and artistic expression from government censors.

Are we that forgetful?

There's always a struggle when issues push the accepted moral boundaries of a cultural society. For example, would it be acceptable today to display hardcore pr0n 24x7 on the JumboTron in NYC? It would be acceptable for some people but not for most. That acceptance may change in the future. How about if we walk around naked if we want to. That's ok in some societies because they have accepted it as the norm.

All of it in a failed attempt to stop the spread of a movie that some saw as the victory of a cultural and sexual revolution and others saw as simply decadent.

Certainly today, with our broadly socially less restrictive attitude to most pornography and to sex more broadly it may seem odd that the government was spending so much effort on something like this," he said. "But attitudes back then were much different.

If maybe the FBI was a little more concerned about terrorists who want to learn to fly planes, but not learn how to land them.....
And a little less concerned with, well, penises, we would all be alot better off.

Tipper Gore headed the PMRC.

How soon folks forget that the Libs were at the forefront of censorship.

Al Gore is a liberal. You can find exceptions to cite, as with many people, but overall he's a liberal.

 I don't give two shits if she was a liberal, communist, or whatever label you want to apply to derail the thread. Censorship is bullshit, and politicians of all stripes have been guilty of pushing it.

I'm not going to blindly support everything a politician of a certain ideology does. I pay attention to the individual issues. I feel that any politician who supports censorship is wrong, regardless of ideology.
