Anyone ever had the interac machine at a store reject you and say insufficient funds even though you actually do have the money? I checked my statement online this morning and then went to the bank to deposit a cheque and take out $20. I then went on to buy some things at a store. I paid with my debit card and it said insufficient funds... I'm like WTF? I know the money's there, I just checked the account. Tried it again, rejected again. I'm like, okay, I'll pay by credit card. I just got home and checked the account again, and sure enough, the money's there.

And just in case you're thinking that I didn't have enough before I put the cheque in, no, that isn't the case. I had enough there whether or not I put the cheque in, and that account doesn't require me to wait for deposited cheques to clear anyways.

Sometimes they will do that if there's a communications failure. Also, make sure you're not over your daily limit on the debit card and that nobody is hijacking your account.

You do know that it takes about 24 hours for a deposit to post to your account before it becomes "available" right?

depends on your account
when i deposit, i can take money out immediately. i can literally have $1 in the bank, depost a a cheque and take out $20 without going negative :p

BUT, if the cheque bounces or SOMETHING, then you will be neg...haha

at my bank it is credited and available immediately.they will credit 1000$ and make available 500$ on the spot when i make a deposit from a cash machine. if it is done at the bank then it is instant for the entire amount of the check.

I already stated in my post that my account isn't set up that way. I can deposit money and immediately I get $500 of that available.

I also already stated that it didn't matter as I had enough money in the account despite the cheque.

I've had communications failure before, but the interac machine just said "timed out" or something to that effect. This time it was a blatant: "Funds not available"

It's happened to us before.. and we had well over 3000 in our account at the time. We then got home and saw on the news that they had some connection problems that messed up that system for a few hours.

*frowns* What sort of store was this? It's not that incredibly difficult to modify a Interac swiper to capture your card # and PIN.

We had a string of PIN theft at a Pizza Pizza near our university a while back using the hacked Interac swiper trick. The thing is, if it was a legitimate communications failure you should have just timed out. An "insufficient funds" message is very suspicious.

It's a reputable place... Mark's Work Wearhouse. I was buying raingear and stuff for my summer job on the golf course. I've gone there many times before.
