If you're going to buy a 6950X, I recommend buying at launch so you get the most out of it. Getting one of these chips mid-cycle just feels wrong.

That's the rub. I'm not already on an X99 platform. To switch up to that, is mid cycle to me. If it was just a chip swap, it would be a no question take my money.

I didn't think Intel would actually use LGA-3647 for HEDT. Old leaks pointed to something like an LGA-2011 v4.

While I didnt know it was 3647, I thought it was pretty common knowledge that Skylake-E was moving to a new socket because of all the new platform features it was introducing with x109 (or whatever they call it) ?

Is there really a chance it could be 2011 again?

Now I just need to save up $2500 for a 12 core Skylake-E processor to replace HW-E.

Yep, check this out:

Bottom right, "Basin Falls" platform. It says "Kaby Lake PCH" and "Skylake Server socket R." "Socket R" is code for LGA 2011.

That's why I'm quite surprised to see the socket 3647 come to HEDT.

Just an excuse for Intel to charge $$$$ in a desperate attempt to compensate for their lack of innovation, inability to get anything out on time and dwindling consumer base.

I was looking at SL-E, but this has dented my enthusiasm.

Here's hoping that Zen delivers.

I remember skylake-e was going to share kaby's pch but I didnt put much thought into the socket part.

PS you forget to attach the image :p

I am confused, isn't this socket designed like NVIDIA pascal sockets instead of using PCIe cards, for HPC (knight-landing,or whatever they are called from intel) Why do I see this socket popping up everywhere as a consumer product?

UPDATE , i mean they might but auch if we think 6950-X99 setup are expensive just wait for this then lol.
