i do think there should be an independent numbering system. even if there are multiple one's developed by each review site "200 anands" or "500 toms" or "5000 3dmarks", it would be better to have a more standard method of comparison. we should be more proactive about inevitable problems that come when the companies dictate their own scheme. we should do something instead of just complain every review about what the company should have numbered their new chip at.

Even with "model numbers" instead of a "performance rating", I think we should be a bit concerned. Look at what's happened to the video card industry and their model numbers; we have things like the 9800, which comes in 4 flavors(normal, pro, XT, and SE), and then the 5900 that also comes in 4 flavors, but SE is a good thing thing this time, and XT not so good. There's just as much potential for tom-foolery with model numbers as there is with the PR system.

Mhz and Performance Ratings... All just model names to me :).

always surprises me that any hardware hobbyist pays the slightest bit of attention to either marketing term.
