IntelliPoint crashing

I just picked up a Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 and upgraded from an Optical Mouse Blue. I was really excited about having 2 extra buttons which I could assign to Cutting and Pasting which I do a lot of.

The problem is, IntelliPoint 5.0 has gone from perfectly stable to really annoying. Since I upgraded, it will only run for a short time and I will then get the 'IntelliPoint has generated errors and must now close' message. It has an option to restart the application, but after a few minutes it crashes again. Plus, even when it's running, the customizations I make to the button assignments simply do not take effect.

Has anyone else had these problems with IntelliPoint? I've uninstalled/reinstalled it numerous times and I've even downloaded it again from Microsoft.com. I know that if you try and install a mouse app from another manufacturer (a la Logitech MouseWare), IntelliPoint will get very upset. However, I can't believe that simply changing to another Microsoft mouse that uses exactly the same driver and application would throw the program into disarray like this. Thanks in advance!
