intellimouse

I went down to pc world today and finally felt what the intellimouse explorer felt like (I'm near sure it was the explorer), it felt mega weird, I usually like to pick my mouse up when it goes to close to the edge of the table.. and it's just a little hard to lift in my opinion, pretty disapointed with the size as well.
They didn't have the logitech mx500 on display, but they did have ctl creative optical, it felt really nice... does anyone know anything about this mouse? good for gaming and that?

Thanks

Why I like the Intellimouse:

A) It's fairly heavy. I can't stand Logitechs (most, anyway) because they're too light IMO. I want to feel like there's something in my hands.

B) It has very good optics. The optics on this mouse are as good as any out there. You can't go wrong.

C) There are no known issues with these mice. Logitechs have had problems with the wheel in games. I've never even heard of a single issue with this mouse.

D) I freaking hate Microsoft. Wait a minute... that's not a reason I like this mouse. Oh well, I hate them anyway.

I use one at home and HAD to buy one for here at work. I can't stand to use anything else. I'd give it another shot if I were you.

It felt pretty light when i tried lifting it.. I expected more to be honest, and the two side buttons should only be one button. I just named logitech cause people here reckon the best mouse is between those two makes.

But I really liked the feel of that creative I was on about, nice sturdy heavy mouse, when a sensitive wheel, sensitive buttons and no side buttons (which often can be triggered accidentally ingame when lifting the mouse in ms intellimouse explorer..), but I'll have another grope at it next time I'm down. No-one heard of this creative one though?

I have the 5 button intellimouse explorer, I use it for gaming all the time. Although it's on the verge of being too light, I love the 5 button's but they don't work with all games. Also I just think it's a great overall mouse. Optical, nice shape, great for Fps imho.

I had a first generation intellimouse explorer and had to give it up. It simply wouldn't play an FPS correctly. Whenever I would try to rocket jump (whip down, fire) It would "strobe" my inputs...as a result I would end up spinning around, shooting a rocket into the sky and then hopping once like a bunny. It sucked in an almost comical way.

The NEW generation of intellimouse explorers are completely different. I would have to say it's the most accurate mouse I've tried next to my Razer Boomslang (which is second to none). It's sampling fast enough now that you can 'whip' your mouse to do those 180 rail shots.

Cleaning .... ah the bliss of never cleaning a mouse is wonderful. You just don't realize how much you have to do it (or how annoying it is when you don't) until you've had an optical for a few months. Plus let's face it, a 'lit up' mouse scores cool points.

I use an older intellimouse (optical, USB). My son thinks the red light is "way cool". (LOL)

anyway, we have seen the spinning thingy here too (although not lately, XP may have taken that problem away ??? ). On one of the computers (We have 2) the cursor seems to be 'lost from the desktop' sometimes when I un-blank the monitor and I have to swipe it a couple times to find the cursor.
I like the side buttons, but some games treat the left, right and wheel-press all as a single button. Not a great deal of value added there.

The only reason I haven't tried something else is because I am not picky.

Did you say rocket jump? Someone else actually plays TFC? It is and will continue to be one of my favorite "run, blast, die, lather, rinse, repeat" games of all time!

I bought a Logitech basic optical mouse when they were fairly new items...about a month ago I bought an Itellimouse Explorer 3.0. I pressed the buttons on every mouse in Best Buy looking for the fastest clickers and best feeling mice.
I bought the Explorer because I have heard the optical mechanism is more accurate than most mice.

Well its been long enough now that I can say that I kind of like it but I do miss my Logitech mouse which was very accurate and reliable. I have kind of big hands and the Logitech felt nice.
I had to disable the two side buttons on the Explorer because I kept hitting them, now every time I hit them it give me a feeling of sort of a loss of control. I hate those buttons.

I am not into having 200 buttons on my mice, 2 buttons and a wheel is all I need, part of my reasoning for this is because I have big hand and could never utlilize the buttons unless they make a bigger mouse.

i love my logitech optical mouse (the plain one) better than all the others i have tried.

a friend of mine has the explorer (5 buttons) but i tried his and i don't like the way it feels or handles compared to my logitech.

Oh did I mention that here at work, I have this sweet DELL 2 button ball moust that is just bad to the bone...It is the best mouse in the world, boomslang, lookout, there's a new mouse in the house and dell isn't taking any crap from anyone....LOL

I've the Intellimouse Optical, I preferred the thought of the 4th & 5th buttons being on each side rather than two thumb buttons.
Good mouse for accuracy, one problem is the side buttons, or maybe its the wheel, sometimes just get activated without pressing, at first I thought I had a monday-morning mouse but heard a few people say it now. Only happens occasionally, and some games require button pressed for a short duration rather than just a press. For quake3 games i think you can increase cg_weaponcycledelay if you have this problem.

Not all games recognise the 4th & 5th buttons, but theyre the same with other mice. Actually the intellipoint has the edge here, you can set any button to any keystroke for any specific application using intellipoint. So you can set intellipoint to set mouse4 to e.g. "f4" and then bind F4 to whatever you want the mouse4 to be ingame.

main thing I dont like about the intellimouse optical is the "feet" seem coarse and grate on my ratpad, which also makes it feel weird when playing games :/

I haven't in a long time. Rocket jumping is actually a Quake technique more so than TFC. It had it's origins in Doom if you can believe it (pretty odd since you can't do a regular jump in doom)

Be sure to use the given software with your intellimouse, otherwise the extra buttons don't always work as advertised.

I use Intellimouse Explorers only. I've got a 3.0 for me and the wife, a 1.0 for the laptop, and a bluetooth (best mouse ever 😀 ) for the HTPC.

As for the weight, i think it's perfect. It feels solid when you move it around and it works great with my hand. Love the feel and shape of the mouse as well.

I tried the MX700 before i got my bluetooth...i just didnt care for it that much. felt like a standard mouse with some extra buttons.

I had some issues with my Intellimouse Optical 5 button and 3.2 drivers not working correctly in games until I got their latest one (free replacement from MS thanks!) which came with 4.1 drivers. The 4.1 drivers solved everything. Everything works great now.

I tried the MX500 this week and am returning it. Nice feel, awesome tracking, and great to have extra buttons but makes my wrist tired...can't have that. Sticking with intellimouse explorer.

Btw the logitech software sucks! It's been unreliable (forgetting button programming) and doesn't have application-specific programming like ie.

I have the intellimouse optical. I didn't like how the Explore and the 4th and 5th buttons both on the thumb side. I also love how, like others have said, there is global and program specific button mapping. That makes this mouse a god send when I'm working in FCP, PS, or AE (yes, the mouse works flawlessly on both PCs and Macs 🙂).

My main mouse ? as in the one I use the most ? is presently the M$ intellimouse explorer 3.0. I have to admit to be amazed at how good this mouse is, seeing that, after all, this is a M$ product. 😉

Totally agree. And much easier to pick up off the pad than the explorer. And cheaper. I would definitely try out the Intellimouse Optical (not Explorer). I love playing MOH and BF 1942 with it. I've got the side buttons set to different vehicle views so I can quickly switch back and forth from first person to third person while I'm flying or driving a tank.

WARNING - If you are not used to having buttons on the side of the mouse you will accidentally click them about 100 times a day for the first 2 or 3 days. After a week, you will wonder how you could have ever lived without those buttons and you will love that mouse.

Yup. I've got the wheel mouse button set for reload, the side button for handgun. It makes it so much easier to play BF 1942 this way.

Doggiedog,
I looked at your system specs.
I've got almost an identical system.
I had the 8KHA+ but killed it with a screwdriver (let's just say the clips on the Volcano 6 cu suck big time).
I loved that board but found a KR7A-Raid for $64 so I couldn't pass up that deal.
It's almost a crime though to have an 8KHA+ and not overclock it. I've got my 1700+ perfectly stable at 1650 Mhz (11x150) and my Ti 200 at 240/510(Ti 500 speed)

neilm,
try out the Intellimouse Optical. I don't think you'll regret it.

Yeah its been a good system for me. I'm not OCing it bc my last OCed rig fried my CPU. I've fried 2 CPUs so I've just about given up. Plus, it runs so hot (not to mention LOUD) that I have to leave the case open or else I'll hit 65c easy.

Edit: It's even more identical to yours. I forgot to update the main HDD. I've got a WD 80GBSE too. My IBM crapped out on me again but what's new.
