Intellimouse problems with CUSL2 MB

I recently purchased the Asus CUSL2 MB with a PIII 866 CPU as a barebone systems and I'm having problems with Microsoft's Optical Explorer mouse. This mouse is physically connected to the USB port and I can't get Windows (Win98 Second Edition) to load the MS Intellimouse driver. It loads a driver called "HID-Compliant Mouse" as the primary driver. The mouse seems to works okay, but during shutdown the mouse starts flashing and then the normal shutdown sequence is locks up. While locked up, if I unplug the mouse from the USB port the computer will continue with its normal shutdown. Called MS Tech support and after a hour of trying things they gave up and said it was a MB problem with the USB port. I've even gone so far as to . . . reseting the BIOS to default, re-formating the HD, re-installing Windows, loading Asus latest drivers all this with only the video card, mouse and CDRom installed and I can't get the mouse to lard properly

Try another mouse to see if the phenom can be duplicated... Windows 98 does have a documented shutdown bug, there is a fix on the MS support pages you can download if you haven't already. I've got the same board in a couple systems with the same mouse with no problems...mobo drivers are installed, right?

try connecting it through the ps2 port(with the included adapter). Make sure the computer is OFF though before you do this

also uninstall the intellimouse program, it just screws things up.
