My Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical recently died after a good many years of use, so I am now looking to purchase a new mouse.

Does anyone out there have experience with both the IntelliMouse Optical (not explorer) AND the Logitech MX500 or 510 series of mice? If so, what are your opinions on both of the mice. Which one do you like better?

About 99% of computer time is spent gaming, and the button setup is very important to me. I have gotten used to the two buttons on the left and right sides of the IntelliMouse. I notice the Logitech has a similar setup, but the two buttons are both located together on the left side of the mouse.

I'm using the 510, but I got it over the microsoft because I liked the fit for my hand the best. Works well for me.

This doesn't quite apply, but...

I bought the Micrrosoft Wireless Optical Desktop Pro 2.0 mainly for the keyboard (wireless + ergonomic, w00t!). It came with a wireless Microsoft mouse with tilt wheel technology, which I thought was a pretty neat feature. Until I opened the box. The keyboard is great, but the mouse feels very, very cheap compared to my Logitech MX700. I played with it for a minute, but ended up tossing it in my spare parts bin without even plugging in the batteries...I didn't like the way it felt. I don't know how it would compare to your IntelliMouse optical, but it was way too plastic-y for me.

The MX700 is similar to the 500/510 series, except that it's wireless. I love everything about it. I play mainly fps's and I haven't noticed ANY lag. The buttons are customizable, too (for example, I had them set up for a 3D modeling app, Rhino 3D). If I were building a computer soley for gaming, I'd definately get the MX510. I've played with it at Best Buy and I like it a lot...even my girlfriend likes it (she wants red one in her box when I build it this summer ;)) Plus, it looks wicked cool in person.
