Intellimouse Optical accuracy problems when moving mouse quickly

Hi, my friend has this mouse (on USB port). I had read some reviews before he purchased it, and they remarked on how, unlike the 1st gen. MS mice with optical technology, the Optical didn't have the same problems in games (inaccurate movement) when moving the mouse quickly.

Well, my friend has this problem. For eg., in Quake3 when you wish to turn around quickly, the mouse gets confused and behaves erratically. You end up disoriented (which often results in a frag for the other player). I tried this on the desktop (moving quickly back and forth) and the mouse would get stuck right away and the cursor would move in unintended directions.

Is there any way to change the sample rate of this mouse and perhaps improve the accuracy? Anyone use this mouse with FPS like Quake3 without the above problem.

Regards,
Al

One of the possible problems could be the type of surface you were/are using it on. I have an Intellimouse Optical and at the beginning I was using a very smooth mouse pad, occasionally this would result in some weird movements, because as soon as i changed the pad back to an old standard one I had no more trouble and now im fraggin happily in Q3A...
If this doesnt help Ill see if there is anything else i can think of...

What type of mousing surface is the mouse on? If it's a very light color (say a white logo on a black pad), the optical sensor gets confused and may skip like that. USB, PS/2 it shouldn't matter (I'm running a USB mouse over PS/2 and if I move the mouse over a bright silver logo on my pad, 10% of the time it will skip. I recommend a very dark pad with no logo (or a logo that's out of the way).

Hi, thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention that my friend is not using a mouse pad. The mouse is placed directly on an average wooden desk (not glossy or reflective) with general patterns running across the desk.

Is a mouse pad recommended for these optical-based mice for optimal/accurate performance? If so, can anyone recommend a good one for the Intellimouse Optical?

Regards,
Al

My Intellimouse Explorer doesn't like the wood pattern of my desk. It skips quite a bit. So I bought a black Everglide pad and it's working perfectly now.

I used a perfectly dark surface for my Optical mouse and trust me it skips and gets confused when moving fast.

I'm on a wooden desk, only problem is the skipping when moving really fast. only really fast. when I'm doing twitch moves sometimes it happens.

I've found that to correct the problem, reduce the amount of movement you need, to turn your charecter. it doesn't make gameplay much worse, compared to if you screw up by moving the mouse too fast..

I suggest MS makes a mouse with a camera that has a wide angle lense. that way, it will see more in every shot, and when you move fast, the camera has a better chance to see overlapping pictures.
