Intellimouse Explorer causing static in my SB Live ?

Hi,

Whenever I play MP3's (using Winamp), I hear random spurts of static that overlay the music. Whenever I seek and replay that part of the song, the static is gone. Thereby, I figure the static isn't in the recording. I gradually noticed that the only times the static comes is when I use the scrolling wheel on the mouse. And not always is there static when I use the wheel. I check out which IRQ's are used by which, and lo and behold, the SBLive is sharing IRQ11 with the "PCI to USB Universal Host Controller", as long as with other components. Can anyone give me a suggestion as to how to solve this?

BTW: I run Win2k w/o the Intellipoint software and with the LiveWare 3.0 for Win2k.
Thanks.

Check the routing of the speaker wires. Get them away from power cords etc. It's probably not the IRQ's.

This may be a simple problem. Sometimes ,depending on the soundcard, there are problems with static...and here are the solutions that I've found to the problems I've had in the past...

1. Midi device causing static... You can mute this.
2. Microphone turned on and picking up feedback. Turn off mic or mute. Also, microphones sometimes have a "boost" option that causes problems...try disabling that as a default(muting will solve this one as well).
3. Computer speakers too close to your monitor. Monitors emit electromagnetic fields that can cause static.
4. Same as 3, only it could be caused by a fan or other equipment in the room...and this could be a problem in the walls with wiring(but not too often).
5. Sound card has been jarred loose and needs to be reseated in the slot.

Check these out and let me know if it helps.

Id bet you are using a PS2 mouse right? I had this problem once with mine.. it would make a quiet 'vvrrrriip' kinda noise whenever i used the wheel. I dont remember what i did to fix it but maybe try moving your sblive to another slot. I am using USB now and I never get it (and didnt even with my ps2 mouse since I did whatever it was I did that fixed it)

Yep you need to get that sound card on its own irq channel. It can share with the likes of "irq holders" but don't let a network card, the usb hub (if you use a usb device), video card try to share that irq.

If nothing is free you may need to go into your bios and nuke com2 to free up an irq.

Cool, all very good suggestions. I have a USB mouse, actually. But those ideas seem good. I will try out those suggestions, thanks!

BTW, I have a BX6r2, which PCI slots share IRQ's? I think I switched around my cards for aesthetics and air flow, but doing it for IRQ reasons and such would be more beneficial for me.

That same thing happened to me until I started using my Explorer mouse on the PS/2 port instead. The problem on my system is that the PCI to USB Root Hub bridge on my system is using the same IRQ as my Live! (oh how Win2k loves to shove 6 devices on the same IRQ....).

Hi Erasmus,

I really don't want to use my Intellimouse on the PS/2 port... is there a way to change the irq of my sound card? My sound card shares IRQ 11 with my Linksys network card, that PCI to USB thing, and my ATI All in Wonder video card. That seems to be a little too much for one IRQ.

You may need to force it to a certain irq using the Win Device Mangler. Check under the resources tab and uncheck "use auto settings". Then pick a freebie. Windows will complain it then won't be able to manage irqs but its management got you into this mess right?

I have an ISA SB16 and a PS/2 IntelliMouse with IntelliEye, and it does the screech thing when using the wheel when Winamp is running.

Hi Jellybaby,

How would I do this in Win2k? The check box is greyed out...

I feel your pain, Sukhoi. It's only occasionally it happens, but it pulls at my anal personality.

Shaka, don't feel too much pain. :) I don't listen to Winamp much, and my mouse isn't working correctly, so I hardly use the wheel anyway. For some reason, Win95A (OSR1) recognizes the wheel button, but it doesn't recognize the spinning part of the wheel. I need to reinstall Windows in a few weeks anyway, so hopefully the problem will solve itself. And yes, I do have the IntelliPoint software installed. ;)
