Intellimouse 2.0 odd problem

I was playing around earlier today, and discovered something odd. I have a Microsoft Intellimouse 2.0 (wireless, tilt wheel). No matter what I do, the software says the battery is "good" and the wireless signal quality "high". Even when I take it out of range, take the batteries out, etc! I tried taking the batteries out, rebooting, and still same thing! Is this just me, or is the software junk?
