Guys,

I need your advice, I am planning to build a server for hosting 4 VMs (virtual machine), each of these VMs will be allocated 1Gig of RAM, so I am thinking

Intel Xeon 5500 series processor, with 6GB DDR3 RAM,

I want to know the best motherboard, Powersupply and cooling devices for this server.

Also this will be my first server of this size, please suggest if this is a good idea to build myself or buy one of those Dell servers,

I am budgeting 3-4K for entire server

go dell or Hp.

Building a server can get more nightmarish when pairing up parts.

My IT friend told it to me best, and i learned first hand... prepacked stuff is the best when you talk about enterprise.

Thanks guys, I am leaning more towards Dell for obvious pricing reasons, any particular reason why I should look into HP

not to rag on tech support sourced in india.

But they seriously bother me.

1. They assume your a noob, even tho you say your an IT.
2. You end up knowing more then them, yet they still ask you to do stupid shit, so you waste time on the phone and "pretend" to do what they ask.
3. Gah... i HATE TECH SUPPORT sourced oversea's...

But thanks for that PRO info.
Is it an option? or Does Dell business only offer Pro?

OP if you go dell make sure you get the PRO.
Trust me, you dont want to talk to a tech support sourced in india.

If you don't need a dual processor, stick with the W3500 series processor to save cost. I am a fan of HP Proliant servers. Whatever you do, don't buy an IBM. We have over 400 HP Prolaint servers and we don't have as much problem as the 20 IBM 3950 servers. What a piece of crap.

I have been running enterprise virtual infrastructure now for 3 yrs and can honestly say, virtualisation is about Memory and I/O, you dont need 8 cores + HT for 4 VM's.

I would go for a DL380 G5 or G6 with only 1 CPU, get another if you really need to, but memory and disk access is the key!

Edit - actually the ML350 G6 looks a better unit than the Dell @ 3.7K
