Intel X25-M is awesome

First thing I noticed is how everything just feels fast and responsive. Second, my compile times dropped from about 1min 20sec to about 55sec... My old drive was a first gen Raptor... System is an Intel Q6600, 8GB RAM, Vista x64.
Very impressive piece of hardware, I haven't had any other upgrade over the last few years make me say wow.

haha, I hope my home computer doesn't feel slow now 🙁

The most annoying noise from my systems comes from HDD vibration and I'd love to change all of them to SDDs..

Then I count how many I'll need and how much it'll cost.. well, I don't even want to begin.

Congrats, OP and enjoy the speed and silence!

OS drive as SSD with Vista set to turn off your other HDDs after whatever time period = pretty quiet 🙂

Unfortunately, then you have the delay when you need to access something on the other HDDs which is annoying...

How about a notebook HDD? You'll actually LOSE performance, but it will be more quiet than desktop drives, and will be relatively cheap. You can get 320GB notebook drives for around $50 (recent Hot Deals thread) and 500GB (largest available) for under $100.

Thanks for the suggestion but I think it's a little too late for me at this point. I have way too many HDDs (w/ RAID and whatnot) and even after shoving 2TB into WHS, I still have enough for 3 other systems. I'll probably get rid of them one by one and wait until SSD's price and performance stabilize.

plus there is the "clickcrunch whirr" sound whenever you access something and the harddrive turns on.

i already decided that this is gonna be my next upgrade, i am just being too cheap right now and not upgrading anything 🙂

I wish my projects at work compiled in a single minute, instead of several hours.

As for the topic at hand, I want an X25-M for my home PC.

I'd love to have several at work. For some reason writing a 3GB file to a desktop computer harddrive is somewhat slow...

Writing that same file on the X25-M won't necessarily be better. Now if you're writing it randomly, then the X25-M clearly wins on that.
