That board has standard 24 pin power plug. Nobody really wants BTX form factor. Buy it now price was $25 until I bid $2.

Sorry, we were out, I just caught this.

Burpo, no it does NOT. It has a micro ATX connector! I opened box and took a pic (not a good pic).....and then delved and found a LINK (but since I first took the bad pic, I will put it up anyhow). The length of standard ATX connectors is bigger, almost an inch and 3/4.....the width of this one is 1 1/2".

I mean it.

Now, this in no way means anyone needing a mainboard for the Optiplex 980- MT will not be able to use THAT PRECISE board, I could use that board.....but pls know it does not have a standard ATX power connector!

I knew it going in.....also, that I would never need a better GPU and so, my EPA PSU with its micro ATX plug would be just fabulous, and it is. I just doubled the RAM and as always, added my second drive for backup.

281vnfp.jpg

Now here is the link I found after I took the not so hot pic. I should have put a little ruler next to the plug, but did not think of that then.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1712697/power-supply-550w-dell-optiplex-980-plz.html

And, Burpo.....I looked at the listing again and do not see any Buy Now offer in the listing. Did I miss it?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817206001

I should add, my two previous Optis had standard ATX PSU connectors, and I upgraded both of them with nice Antecs, for, as I later realized no good reason.

The one in the auction has a standard (small) 24 pin connector like Micro ATX, but I have an adapter for the larger power supply plug in. The Buy it Now price was $25, but It was also an auction, with a starting bid of .99 cents. When someone bids, instead of using "Buy it now", the buy it now price disappears. He wanted $25 + shipping. I bid $2 and may end up with it. Not many buy old tech, especially BTX & no overclock. I sure hope someone bids higher than me.

Hi again...

Yes indeed that is exactly what it has. But fair warning: while it's 24 pins, THE WIRING IS PROPRIETARY. Sooo yr adapter will not work without REWIRING. Pls use the link I put up and scroll thru those infinite and fascinating posts.

This board and this Optiplex are not outdated. It was made in 2012. For someone who need faster than my i7 870, they would feel it is outdated. Cause that's the fastest chip for the socket.

Of course it affords OCing! I just choose not to ever do that.

My initial take was you wanted to buy that board to re sell it for a profit.

Sorry, I still don see a buy now anywhere in that listing, I must have missed it,. and, given some people apparently might pay over $300 for this board as of now....it's not old enough to be a normal price, it just doesn't makes sense to begin with, that someone offered it for $25. Lowest price I see on eBay is $90.

Now, I must add here: to me, the elements which should comprise choosing to buy a computer for any given individual: the precise needs of that individual.

Again, Optis are made mainly for businesses and institutions, not gamers. Nobody at those places needs an insatiable power hog GPU; I assume, if they are running W7, they might not even care about Aero. But I like Aero.

This system could not be more perfect for all my app and needs. Plus, unexpectedly, in the first 3 mons after I got it, I noticed lower energy bills! It is that energy efficient compared to my last one, to have made that difference.

A great deal within the Optiplex is proprietary (am sure, including the latest Haswell Optis). But, in my personal experience, good proprietary (esp the coolers) I have no need to change what is already very well evolved...I just fiddle with RAM, add backup drive.....in my now backup Opti even a second optical drive.

My now backup Opti, like the one before it, has standard ATX connectivity....but I wasted time and money upgrading those PSUs, there was no need. I still have the units I replaced, of course.

Finally again, my take is that board will go much higher at the end. So, not to worry! If you end up getting it, you can always post it somewhere and sell it to someone with an Opti 980 MT.

Not even close. For me and many I know....re this system, the force is very strong indeed. Earning/chasing/owning all the data, and, in perspective is always the goal in all things, never being stuck in any narrow vision, forget some pitiable peeing contest.

Fact is....only 33% of the world has systems with QUAD CORE!

The famously discerning guy who runs this building (also lives in it, third generation of the original engineer in 1930) will only use Opti MTs in the management office. One for him, the other for the accountant and, both older than the one I am on.

They both run very esoteric software.....after all, it's a BUSINESS.

Course, always bought new, Jimmy can afford anything. I do envy the two 27" Apple screens hooked up to them, tho.

FYI: naturally, first got all the documentation before deciding on the 980 MT, forget this individual system...including the service manual. Below, from the latter:

Edit: Just found this.....I adore this vendor, I got my now backup Opti from them, my GX620, they're in Texas and they work with Dell re the aftermarket. Insane smarts and integrity. I do it myself, but if you want, they will configure a given system for you.

Notice, they sold 20 of these boards, my board, the D411T, as of April.....at a pretty good price: $75. They dont have more as of now.

BTX form factor motherboard is only wanted by people that have that old technology. Standard ATX Case's do not allow using a BTX motherboard. Intel stopped making it in 2009! 3yrs old is antique in computers. I hope someone needs it, cause I sure don't! All ebay auctions that have a Buy It Now price disappears if someone bids on it and it has no reserve. The original Buy it now price was indeed $25. Nobody bought it.

OK, but all three of my Optiplexes including this, my newest one, have had boards custom made by intel via partnership with Dell, tho U have to delve to find that out, cause they naturally say DELL.

And I like them! I don build my own rigs like you do. Only coupla days ago, I learned their SATA controllers are superior to all others.

Only had one die, and I killed it. So, I replaced it.

Remember, article says they made them for TWENTY YEARS.
______________________________________________________
Edit: it's true, very basic boards, but that's something I like about them. My needs are very basic; a system made for businesses almost always has no frills.

We are each unique.:)
_______________________________________________________
Not only do I not change my computers like some people change socks, I don even wear socks.;)

Here's a tested pull of the one I am on for average price:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-D441T-...348027864?pt=Motherboards&hash=item1c40e7f5d8

And HERE, is another from some vendor clearly in some lunatic asylum (yes, I see this one is new):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-DELL-Op...420324090?pt=Motherboards&hash=item4ad624ecfa

Yes, stable as a rock; I like stable. I think, in most hardware, fewer and fewer Mfgs make everything for everyone in the world. LED panels, etc.

Not chips tho.

So you're worried you won't be able to buy a dell? I'm pretty sure they won't have problems sourcing basic boards.

I must say, this has taken me aback. Not sure, given the density of this thread, and the clarity as well, how you ever came to that postulation.:\

No offense, Burpo....but I must say, I am so happy I live in my world and not yours in this! I submit, your perspective is startlingly narrow.

This is not a tiny board in any way, and, it's as configurable as anyone not a gamer could want and while the Optis have always been know for their silence, solid construction and excellent engineering, in this system which I I adore, the thermal engineering is off the hook.

I chose this third Opti very carefully in every way, and I am beyond delighted with every part of it. And, so are friends and colleagues who have tried it to experience it.

And, if you scroll up, you will see systems identical to this one.....go for very good money on eBay.

Again, given what the board in question goes for at this point in time (they will come down over time), not only on eBay, but all over the net.....why anyone would offer one for $25 doesn't compute.

They only starred showing up a coupla mos ago, I put the first two on my watch list, both had fixed prices....just under $100--both tested pulls--- and they both were sold very fast.
________________________________________________________
Edit: What I suggest you do is simple: use the links I put up to other eBay vendors offering this board---there are others online, all for big money---and, in the unlikely event you get this thing you now abhor....you simply contact one or more of the vendors in question (or the others on the net offering it) and offer to sell them the thing.

If it's a tested pull.....you will do just fine.

I must not be the only one with "narrow perspective". I now own your precious Intel Opti 980 motherboard for the staggering price of .99 cents

As I said, nobody wants old tech in BTX form factor, except IT techs that may need 1 for an aging work station. When they do, they will pay the price YOU think they're worth. You wanted a "spare" for $50. Still want it? Shipped to your door, $50? It would be my pleasure maam ;)

It was on ebay for $25 buy it now, nobody wanted it. I bid and posted the link here for days, and after a week on Ebay, still NOBODY wanted it! It's an old BTX board! Worth only what the market will bear.

The force is weak in this one Burpo.

J/K a bit

Forgive me, Burpo but it seems you are angry at the wrong person, and that's hurtful.
The goal in buying anything is to do our homework, yes? So that we are informed re the reality. Big lesson here!

Again, when you posted a deal is a deal and that you had bid....I assumed you wanted it to resell it.

And, while this socket is hardly cutting edge; the 17 870, for me, with 8GBS of ram, and yes, 3GB/SATA 2....may be all the speed and power I will ever need.

AGAIN, only 1/3 of PC users on the planet even had quad core of any kind!!!!

Pls see my suggestion that you use the contact button to reach out to other Vendors offering this item on ebay for the kinda money the first two which appeared on eBay went for. I put up some links somewhere above.

There are also other vendors on the net offering the board for serious money you might contact. Were I you, that is wut I would do.

If you follow up, you will come out ahead.

Again, U bet: give its reality in every part, I just LUV THIS SYSTEM!!! Knew every part when I chose it.
I LIKE the BTX. The thermal engineering is off the hook.

And, Burpo, I am innocent of any wrong doing in any of this. I am pained you apparently think otherwise.
...or, that you assumed you could drop a Sandy or Ivy or Haswell chip into the socket in this board.
___________________________________________________
Follow up:

Here is a not eBay vendor who offers them refurbished. Must make sure yours is the MT board, not a smaller configuration, there are three. you might use the contact seller button here and I have seen others, some selling them for more than this vendor:

http://www.discountelectronics.com/product?product_id=19440&product_model=30

Next: a guy posting on Tom's hardware whose 980 (tho not sure about the configuration of his) had some electrician fry its board; someone responding put up a perfect pic of the inside of my 980 MT....even with two HDDs.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2114825/dell-optiplex-980-motherboard-issue.html

Below, another vendor you might reach out to who offers these, and it appears both the MT and DT configurations use the same board (the MT which I always choose, is the biggest; obviously, the SSF uses a much smaller board):

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/lapt...0D441T-CN-0D441T-Fully-Tested/1102365525.html

You could even use Craig's List.....I wouldn't, but U could.

Unless the board U got is not in excellent health--reason I wasn't interested, was, the original listing just says USED; I only buy tested pulls---but if it's a healthy board, you truly did get a bargain. I am pained you are so furious....forget, at ME.:|

And, that your premise is the demographic of THIS community represents the Big Picture re aftermarket, re PC components.....well, Burpo, that's another big distortion....re "nobody wanted it" cause you posted a link HERE for days!

That was the only listing I have ever seen for any board where the condition wasn't part of the listing. Perhaps interested humans contacted the seller asking it was a test pull, or at least pulled from a working system, and, the vendor could not say.

Big lessons re commerce and shopping and caveat emptor here. For Openers. Those are worth far more than $20.

____________________________________________________
One more: this, on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Mini-Tow...509481&sr=8-3&keywords=optiplex+980+minitower

As long as they are healthy, the aftermarket for this puppy will remain...healthy.

Lol, nobody mad at anyone. Just bustin your grapes.. You're so easy..lol

I bought it for ME! Some of us old timers are mad scientists :) This is going to upgrade an FX 8020 Gateway (socket 775 quad core) that I am typing this from. After looking closely at the board & layout..
$_57.JPG

It is exactly what I need for MY aging work horse (also BTX) that I just can't part with..
http://www.cnet.com/news/gateways-quad-core-pcs-hit-store-shelves/

With a 750 watt power supply and storage that's neatly laid out & housing 7 terrabytes of ME, I so wanted to bring it up to speed a bit..

This will accomplish my purpose (with a Xeon X3470 I got for $85) and will be a decent upgrade for a little over $100..

So you see there was a method to my madness.. Messing with you was just icing for the cake :whiste: lol

Sigh. First, my "grapes" are ovaries. Next, if they are easily busted, is cause I am never about acrimony or combat and I am a trusting little human....who is never, ever moved to bust anyone's anything arbitrarily.

But more important, I read yr, I submit, revisionist lyrics, but I trust the crystal clear MUSIC as it unfolded as I got every .....riff and progression. I do care and so, I took yr misery seriously.

I bought it for ME! Some of us old timers are mad scientists This is going to upgrade an FX 8020 Gateway (socket 775 quad core) that I am typing this from. After looking closely at the board & layout..

Well, OK, I like mad scientists of all species.... and the image was helpful for sure, plus, again, I assumed yr interest in the thing was to resell assuming you were among the cutting edge everything contingency here.

I have no clue if the socket: LGA 1156, will accept the chip you have in mind; U better make sure. I also have no clue re the benchmarks of the chip in question, I only know my Lynnfield i7 870 is the fastest chip for the socket....I would not have bought this individual system with even the 860, forget any of the others people chose for this system.

Now, your PSU plug will have to be REWIRED. One of the links I put up takes U thru the specifics. Not a simple project, but an adapter will not work, cause the wiring of the power port on the board is PRORIETARY. But 750 for this board is overkill totally. Not sure if the chip in question has integrated video or not, but, if not, U must choose the right, compatible GPU.

Remember, every element of the 980 (all Optis, in fact) was made for businesses....NOT GAMERS. That includes the newest 9020 Haswell Optis (http://en.community.dell.com/dell-b...-latitude-6540-and-optiplex-9020-and-xe2.aspx)

Fab cooler, needed housing but the housing is uber. And, the cooler in yr workhorse looks very similar, perhaps even identical.

So, at this juncture, it seems to me yr only challenge might be PSU connectivity. But why you would even consider any 750W PSU for yr system, I do not get....cept you have the unit.

Please, no more attempts at revisionist lyrics....cause for anyone plugged in, it's always about the Music.

I forgive you tho I am exhausted, and please keep us up to speed re yr project. I only hope that's a healthy mainboard.

And for Gods' sake, Stop apologizing that you are, we just learned, not some pitiable slave to Haswell and water cooling (MOST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD DON NEED THOSE)! It's a GOOD thing. ():)

My blood sugar has plummeted....and I now need cannolis.

Wow! I delve by default.....just learned yr chip, which I nevah heard of--- is a Lynnfield, very much like my 870 but, I think, more affordable:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819117222

U bet, the board you got is the right socket. I had no clue intel made this chip. Minor difference in FSB. I never pay attention to buses of any kind.:sneaky: Frontside, backside, side side. I use....the subway.

Guy on Newegg posted this re yr chip:

Pros: Everything! You stack this processor up apples to apples with the i7 870 and you get the EXACT same thing. The only difference is the Xeon has a higher FSB at 1333 vs the i7 870 at 1066.

But that guy is rabid overclocker....I do not do that stuff...to me, greedy, and I like everything to run at stock and as cool as possible.

I now wonder why, given yrs was more affordable than mine, and maybe in ways better, why Dell did not choose it, rather than my 870 which is still selling for way too much money, but no way what it was when it was launched.
________________________________________________
Edit: Well! YOUR chip has better average CPU mark than my i7 870! Yrs is 5.600, mine is 5.438. I never choose a chip without knowing its benchmarks.

We learn stuff every single nano!!!!!!!
_________________________________________________
Another edit, see this, scroll down to the bars:

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-X3470-vs-Intel-Core-i7-870

WHY DID INTEL MAKE BOTH OF THESE? Such teeny differences, makes no sense to me.
_________________________________________________
K....hold on, I am still delving using the above link and learning; yours can be overclocked very slightly more than mine; differences re ECC RAM....but I just got, yours costs way less re energy per year than mine despite they R both 95W!

Why does yours cost so much less re energy? I do not know. Tho, I would like to know. But what business would not want a more affordable chip re energy costs were one available?

I knew what i was doing, even if you didn't. There's always discounted Xeon chips pulled from working servers. For me it's just a cheap way to squeeze a couple more years out of an old sentimental piece that has never even hiccuped.

Point is you can always find a deal that suits your needs, when you're patient.

I knew what i was doing, even if you didn't

Where precisely, Burpo.....in any of the above is there indication one I don know what I am doing in any of this re that board? Or didn't ALWAYS? I will not ask the next logical, rhetorical question.

Who assumed/POSTED the power connector was "a standard ATX connector'? And who made sure to bring the accurate info on this still important issue? And, with LINKS. Links...with pics.

Bottom line, even in this above (breaks my heart) U gotta throw down and make into some contest? And falsely accuse? Come on...you are better than that! And, it now appears, with enough experience in life to not have to APOLOGIZE for your choices in technology re this "old' system whose reality you only came forth with 14 seconds ago.

I mean it, there is something there to apologize for? Some Crips and Bloods thingy? (NO!) If a given system meets yr individual needs and beyond and you are not vulnerable to even a tidal wave of hot shots and what they MUST HAVE just to feel OK....there is nothing to APOLOGIZE for!

Just a way to squeeze a couple more years out of an old sentimental piece that has never even hiccuped.

AGAIN.....why you think you have to apologize for that, or ANY computer you choose to use? That system is still faster than 2/3 of what humans have in the world re PCs! I recently learned that important to know statistic from the official Dell guy who was pitching a cutting edge i7 lappy on QVC; QVC is hands down their best (also HP's), and longest standing retail vendor. No bargains at all; they cut deals with software Mfgs and bundle, but mainly, these shopping channels allow customers to divide payments over 6 mos. That alone is the lure re commerce, and boy, it seems to work, we were mesmerized by the number they sold just while we were watching. And, with Office included, that system went for close to $900.

Could there be more invaluable lessons on more levels to learn in this thread than there are? NO.

NO CONTESTS HEREIN; no anger,no attacks justified. Well, not any objectively. Kindly get this and desist from those. Watch the playoffs instead. I devoted much time and effort in response to your misery herein wit that board.....and followed up re yr chip.

But, no biggie, it was normal....plus, I will now replace the calories I lost...prolly around 4K.:sneaky:;)

Get me cannolis!!!!

Jus came in and caught this.

Burpo, it was what it was and it is what it is. Clear as Stuben crystal.

When I don't know something I tell the world with not a shred of reservation or a second thought. Cause I have no need to act as if I know things I have yet to learn! That is a marker for health & liberation. Along with celebrarting the superior aspects of yr Xenon as I delved and learned them.....listed them, celebrated without a thought. See that? That HAPPY thing?

We are here to share, discuss, learn, contribute and help each other, yes?

The core issue herein.....was not yr chip (DRUM ROLL) it was.....THE BOARD. And, esp, its power plug interface which remains an issue for you, ASSUMING the board you got is HEALTHY.

Notice, I reiterated RE THE PLUG for reasons driven by caring and absent politics; if you try to use the PSU U mentioned, you will have to REWIRE THE PLUG. I also reiterated, a diagram to accomplish this, if yr up for it.....can be found via a link I put up.

Re the MUSIC.....EVERY NOTE, clear as a Jill Scot track. Re the heartbreaking shame of any kind cause that system is not cutting edge, you only came clean about its reality very late.....then had to say yr attachment is SENTIMENTAL, etc.

Also note, picking up on all of this ongoing, but herein, the shame issue....I tried to disabuse you of the justification for such "shame"....GIVEN IT TRULY DOES LEAD TO NEEDLESS SUFFERING! Along with yr upset when you learned about the board you had bid on, Burpo, this was just painful for me to pick up on....and that, my friend, is healthy and NOR-MAL. This has a name: EMPATHY.

Earlier example of the intense board upset issues comprising infinite post of yrs railing against it: aside from giving specifics re its reality, my next response was to delve to help you SELL IT...and I linked you to infinite vendors to whom you might!

But what is Burpo still doing? Still in combat/contest mode. And, re "giving up," that should be the one propensity to give up: the combat/games. NEVER give up on learning, being honest, free of hobbling politics, growing as a person....the routes to happiness.

U bet, we are HUMANS using, and in this community, loving technology.

Finally, I hope the board is healthy, again, a concern of mine for the reasons I shared. Wish you had some way of testing it outside a system. Perhaps you asked the vendor and got an answer....I don't know.

I respect yr frugality....and VERY often, frugality has nothing to do with disposable income. It's profligacy I have no respect for, along with anyone on autopilot driven things for the wrong reasons. And false pride.

Burpo...I wish you every good thing within the chronology of yr project.:) And, without: yr life journey in general! That, for me, is a real default.

Group hug, exhale on the exertion..... and pass the cannolis.
