So...what is the Intel Viiv software's purpose? All I can tell is it has some settings pages in Vista Media Center and wants to index a media library (I can't fathom why when the library is already setup).

Does it improve playback or streaming to my xbox360 somehow? Or is it just wasted bloat that I should uninstall?
 
I think it is Intel's version of a UPnP server. If you have a Viiv-compliant media streamer (like D-Link DSM-510), it gives the media streamer access to Viiv-only online content.
 
Well if that's the case then I don't need it. I did a little researching online, and it seems just about everyone was, and has been since confused as to what the hell the purpose of the technology was. It didn't seem to provide anything new and, I think, was causing my Vista computer to sometimes freeze while streaming Recorded TV to my Xbox360.
 
I thought it was pretty useless too and uninstalled it. Of course, that was just before I got the Viiv-ready DSM-510 media streamer. Just like it has buttons for Videos/Music/Photos, it has a button for Viiv online content (which is now greyed out since there is no Viiv server on the local network).

After I got the DSM-510, I thought about re-installing the software. I didn't think it would have any useful content, but I was just curious what Viiv content was available out there. I could not find any useful information on Intel's Viiv site to justify re-installation of the software.

They certainly did a p*ss-poor job of marketing it. I guess it is geared toward an average newbie who will get attracted by a flashy poster and a nice sticker on the PC of a program with no real practical value.

What I read online, was that there was no online content unique to viiv that wasn't available through media center. However, if you don't have an actual media center extender, then I guess that would preclude you from getting that content if the Viiv software isn't installed.

I also read it was supposed to be able to on-the-fly transcode various popular video file types (divx/xvid avis, mp4) for streaming, since media center extenders don't support formats outside of mpeg and wmv...but aside from the feature being reported, I couldn't find any actual hands-on reviews about it. Maybe it never really happened or worked, otherwise it should have shown up as an alternative to using Tversity and the like for the Xbox360.
