Yesterday tried to install a new motherboard (Intel 815 chipset) - clean Win98 install, followed by all the 815-specific drivers, including the Intel Ultra-ATA Storage Driver. Unfortunately, the board didn't work as expected - if I overclocked the CPU (cel2), Windows would restart instead of shutting down. Microsoft's shutdown patch didn't install b/c my Win98 is not SE. Well, I decided not to waste my time with the motherboard (my new rule regarding hardware is: if it doesn't work right out of the box, return the damn thing the next day and get something else) and replaced it with my old BX board. Being lazy, I didn't do a clean Win98 reinstall and instead just started up Win98 after swapping the boards and let it install the necessary drivers by itself.
The weird thing is: the Intel Ultra-ATA driver is still there and, apparently, still works. In Device Manager, the HD properties no longer show the DMA option and hard disk controllers show up as "Primary Ultra-ATA Controller" and "Secondary Ultra-ATA Controller". Moreover, the HD speed has increased when compared to my old setup, at least according to Sandra 2000 benchmarks 🙂
