Intel turbo i7

Is there an easy way to make sure that turbo is functioning? I thought when there was a high load the cpu should be upclocking by one multiplier setting. I am not seeing this happen when for example encoding a video

Assuming you are using a well-threaded encoder, you will not see turbo when encoding as I understand it. Turbo only kicks in when less than the total number of cores are being stressed.

Download Prime95 and cpu-z. Open both, then start a torture test with one thread and watch cpu-z. You can run any number of threads up to max cpu thread count. Like SexyK said, in a well threaded encoder, turbo will not function since many cores are being used. But when only one demanding thread is running, the idle cores will downclock and the core running the thread will overclock.

I thought on socket 1366 Turbo will give you one multiplier higher (133MHz gain) with all four cores, and 2x multiplier higher (266MHz gain) with one core active?

Ok, didnt realize it wouldnt clock up if all cores were being used

That is not 100% correct.

At least for my i7 860, it will up the multi by 1 step even under full load.

The 860 runs at 2.93 GHz worst case and goes up tp 3.4 GHz for single threads.

Yeah, depends upon your particular motherboard and your settings. I can run turbo with all 4 cores (8 hyperthreading) under full load using a Foxconn Bloodrage.
