Intel to support SDRAM on Pentium 4!

RAMBUS is going to be pissed. zdNet reports that Intel will definitely release a PC133 chipset for Pentium 4 and that *maybe* this same chipset will support DDR as well.

My gut says Intel will stick it to RAMBUS.

I don't think they're allowed to make their own chipset that supports DDR Ram. I read a report that said intel wants VIA and other companies to make P4 chipsets that can use DDR Ram.

pc133? damn that is a bit crazy seeing as how the current athlons are screeming for more memory bandwith, how the hell is a p4 gonna react. I guess they are just doing it to fill demand... although it will cripple its performance somewhat...

do a [.l] and then a [./l] to do a link... both w/o the period (.) i just tossed that in there so they wouldnt turn what i said into a link :)

If this turn out to be true I hope no mobo maker will include both SDRAM and rambus on the same pcb. Keep the evil off the board I say!

Depending on when they release the p4, it is becoming less important to have support for normal good ram. If you look online 128mb pc800 is *only* $300. Compared to 128 pc800 costing $1200 and 128mb pc133 costing $60 when it was first introduced, it's not that bad. SDRAM is twice as expensive now, and rambus 4 times cheaper.

If you ask me, rambus is too slow. An i820 can't touch an i815, much less a BX. Intel needs DDR SDRAM to compete performance wise, not for the price. That's just my opionion

Looks like time to sell the Rambus stock if you have any.

First we see Intel distancing themselves from Rambus. The we see Intel licensing P3 SDRAM/DDRAM chipset design to VIA (who already owns 1/2 the market - much at Intel's expense). Then there are talks of Intel joining the anti-trust moventment against Rambus and possibly suing them.

The Intel lawyers must have found a loophole in their agreement with Rambus. Certainly the 6 year Rambus stock option of 1,000,000 shares at $10 each must have lost its lustre to Intel. Next year, $10 a share for Rambus stock may be way overpriced. Intel obviously stands to make a lot more from the sale of their own chipsets and fears Rambus as a potential competitor (not to mention performance vs price issues - note the "leaked" benchmarks by Intel).

What has happened is called "seeing the writing on the wall." Gee, we could have told them that (actually we did - 'told you so', Intel:D).

Hey why not just wait until its out instead of trying to scratch around to find out just wait a while when it comes it they will tell you everything.

Intel didn't just join the anti-trust movement against RAMBUST, they are now essentially leading it. Check this link http://www.techweb.com/se/directlink.cgi?EBN20000717S0003

So far they are going with the SDRAM support in the chipset because

<< "Rambus can terminate Intel's Direct RDRAM license if the company moves to make chipsets that support non-Rambus memory with a bandwidth of 1 Gbyte/s or more -- a ban that clearly encompasses the 1.6- to
2.1-Gbyte/s performance of DDR SDRAM.

Still, using PC133 in a system which has a 400MHz FSB ???

RAMBUS is already down 12 to 73 in pre-market trading. Damn it wasn't too long ago that they were around 135 and thats after the 4-1 split.

I for one, hope Rambus chokes! :)

wouldn't be so bad if they weren't trying to bully thier way in and all of a sudden take over the industry by charging royalties for something that has been used for several years already....

Look at it this way, if Rambus hadn't been such a bully and was able to hide their intentions maybe they would have succeded. And then we'd be stuck with RDRAM.

Sometimes things just turn out for the best.

Of course, they may still pull it off, but with so many enemies they made it is doubtful. Likely they will remain a company collecting royalties off their IP - just not the major player they were hoping to become.

As to suing Intel - Intel must have found a loophole in their contract.
