First-gen i5-i7 chips (without the IGP) are 45nm.

I wonder if this means I'll see my CPU selling for <$300. :p

This isn't really news. It's a standard Intel EOL notice for their older chips. This happens periodically. Notice that the E5400 is going EOL, but no notice of the E5500, E5600, or E5700. So those are likely to still be produced. A shame about the Q9550 and Q9650, that might make their price go up a little bit on the secondary market.

That is still a surprising ways out, considering that these chips have been supplanted almost entirely by new ones.

When do we get new Celerons? Some tasty ~$60 processors from Intel would be nice :)

Or is that the niche Core i3's are supposed to take over?

Core i3s bottom out at $99 no? It's still a bit pricey for a file server build I'm considering. But their performance and power savings is very nice. Huge advantage over a cheap AMD Athlon II system... but I'm just not sure about the $50 premium.

I believe low end "Pentium" chips are going to be released in Q2
