I have a friend's computer to get up and running. The old Intel Pentium 2.53 GHZ/512/533/1.525v CPU is dead. Is this CPU still available? Is there an Intel CPU available that will equal it's performane. Keeping the cost down is #1, so equal is fine, she does not want or need higher performance.

Help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

You can find them on eBay but not the retail channel anymore. My suggestion is eBay. You can find a 2.66GHz 533 FSB P4 for around $100, 2.53 probably same or cheaper.

True on the ebay, but maybe even a little higher. Disgusting part is you can get a sempron 2500 and motherboard for $130 and OC and blow the doors off that 2.53, and have a new upgradeable motherboard.

Just a thought.

Even more disgusting that people are willing to pay the P4 Premium still.... Though I doubt the OP's compy in question will be OC'd

No, sorry to say. You can replace the motherboard and cpu (AMD) for the price od an old dinosaur Intel CPU alone !. I have an Intel 400 fsb socket 478 mobo, but I can;t find a cpu for less than $75 !! (unless its a celron) and I refuse the pay that much, when you can get a moden AMD processor thats WAY faster for the same money.

LOL so true, but for some people the inconvience of buying a new mobo and installing it gives just buying a new proc the nod.

OP, how much is your time worth? Mark is right, but if you don't want to spend the time basically building a new PC and re-installing windows, etc. you can just bite the bullet.

It's simple supply/demand economics.

I browsed on eBay, the cheapest 533FSB P4's are going for around the $80 mark.

I also saw a Pentium-M 730 go for $40 (I paid $80 for mine :| )

Perhaps is the whole Lexus vs. Yugo perception... Unsuspecting buyers believe the P4 is luxury keeping used models at a premium, while us "in the know" simply find a Mercedes dealer, slap a Chevy bow tie on their cars when the managers back is turned, convince the new salesman they put the wrong price tag on it, and laugh all the way to the bank at those rolling their new Lexus's.

For the OP, what motherboard? Would you consider overclocking, assuming full stability?

Why I ask is because mobile Celeron chips are almost as good as the P4, are cheap on Ebay and can easily clock to 2.5-3GHz.
