I just noticed this today, thanks to having an air duct in the case. When there is absolutely no activity in Windows, the CPU fan stops until an app is launched or something that causes some CPU activity. I have a E6750 non-OC, these things run so cool that the fan can afford to stop with no activity? Confirmed with using Gigabyte Easy Tune 5, when the fan stopped it read 0.

You're probably ok. My old socket 754 athlon 2800 did the same thing. The fan hardly ever moved unless gaming.

It is normal, the fan will spin up again when it hits a temperature threshold.

I was extremely alarmed the 1st time i powered up an E6600 and cpu fan didnt spin :D

Yeah I noticed that last night with my new quad core Q6600, I installed it and the fan didn't spin on until I started doing things.
