Intel SpeedStep Processors

How do I tell if my Compaq Presario 1501CL has this technology? And if it does which I am hoping so since it was marketed as having a mobile processor, how do I monitor it to see if it's working?
Thanks for any help in advance.

Do you know what Intel Chip you have in it?
If you are running windows, you can look in the system information dialog for CPU info, you could also look in the BIOS for the type of CPU (usually it mentions SpeedStep).

It said on the tag "Intel Pentium 4 1.60GHz-M" and to be sure it wasn't a marketing gimmick i asked a rep if it was a "true mobile processor" to which he immediately nodded yes. I'm not sure how reliable his knowledge was though as you can never tell.

In the system properties it has the following besides Manufactured and supported by:

Compaq Computer Corporation
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHz
1.59 GHz
256 MB of RAM

I have not been able to find any mention of speedstep anywhere including BIOS, and if i do have it I still don't know how to monitor it and see if it's actually working and benefiting me, I do notice my monitor goes much dimmer when it's running on batteries, but other then that, how can I tell and monitor?

To run SpeedStep, you have to install the Intel drivers for same. Check here:

Intel

Generally, unless the mobile CPU is 500 MHz or faster, it won't support SpeedStep.

OK - the P4 Mobile uses "Enhanced SpeedStep." Here's the linky - Intel P4

Another little discussed fact of life - Windows XP kills that driver when it is installed. It really doesn't need it, says M$.

It doesn't. Only the highend Compaq 2800 series uses mobile P4's. If it was a P4-M it would say so in system properties.

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4
Mobile CPU 1.6GHz
1.59GHz

Also, the Intel Inside sticker should have an "M" on it.
