Yeah but anyone still using a sandy bridge is probably doing it because they've got a 4.7-5.0GHz overclock. It is a very tough choice to upgrade away from a multiyear stable 4.9GHz overclock to something that might do 4.4 but might also leave you stuck at 4.2.

This. I am still waiting for the 6700K and more Z170 ITX mobos to be released, plus DDR4 prices to settle before deciding to ditch my Z97i-Plus I picked up on a Frys deal. (Also picked up a 4790K, i3-4170 and playing with G3258s lol).

Exactly.....
Plus the two extra cores Skylake-E will bring :D

Yay! Finally.. someone here with SkyLake!
Get it put together! We can't wait to see & hear results.. From what I've been reading, this is a flexible platform for overclocking :D Nice system! What was the grand total?

http://www.hardware.fr/articles/940-7/hd-graphics-530-pratique-jeux.html

DDR3-2133 11-11-11-31 faster than DDR4-2800 16-16-16-36 in this iGPU test.

Timings are really killing DDR4. The GT4e model of Skylake will have a field day.

People saying some reviews are favouring Skylake based on higher DDR4 clocks alone should take a look.
DDR3-1600 CL8/CL9 DDR3 (used in most Haswell tests) is superior to DDR4-2133 CL15 DDR4 in true latency (used in AnandTech's Skylake review).

Haswell DDR3 1600 CL9 = 1.25 ns x 9 CL = 11.25 ns true latency
Skylake
DDR4 2133 CL15 = 0.94 ns x 15 CL = 14.06 ns true latency
DDR4-2400 CL15 = 12.5 ns latency
DDR4-2800 CL15 = 10.7 ns latency
DDR4-3000 CL15 = 10 ns latency

PurePC was one of the few reviews where a clock per clock comparison at (nearly) the same true latency was done.
Skylake DDR4 2666 CL13 (9.75 ns)
Haswell DDR3 1600 CL8 (10 ns)

The results?

PurePC said:
15.9% faster @ Battlefield 4 SP
10% faster @ Crysis 3
21.3% faster @ Far Cry 4
16.5% faster @ Watch Dogs
16.5% faster @ Arma III
13.2% faster @ TES Skyrim
14.5% faster @ Starcraft 2
18.2% faster @ GTA V

Overall: Skylake-S 15,8% faster than Haswell per clock.

Quite a bit different than AnandTech's 'Skylake is slower than Haswell with dGPUs' B$, isn't it? :)

Aww yesss, it's all here finally :)

Congratulations. Very good choice of parts.
Don't forget to share your impressions and how it compares to your good old Lynnfield chip.

Those sound like Broadwell overclocks...? I think Anandtech had the worst OCing Skylake out of every review I read, and they were 4.5 Ghz.

Edit: almost every other review is 4.6-4.7 Ghz for Skylake. 4.8+ being exceptional.

Agreed. If the reviews are any indication most users will have little trouble hitting 4.5-4.7GHz with a decent cooler.

No i won't be sidegrading my system. I upgrade my cpu when i get atleast 100% performance increase over my old one. So 100% faster than Sandy Bridge will take until 2020 I'm guessing. We're at 40% now so another 60% is remaining.

So 40% increase in CPU performance (not counting all the platform improvements as well) is a "sidegrade" in your opinion? Are you new to the IT world?

Putting it together tomorrow after getting up from bed, it's almost 11PM local time so lacking motivation to build it half tired against night :D Will definitely post some impressions after I get it up and running.

Total cost was just hair above 2000€, incl. 24% VAT.

Congratulations. Very good choice of parts.

Will share impressions after I put it together tomorrow and get some impressions. I expect to be totally blown away by its performance when compared to my old Lynn.

Tom's Hardware: Pricing On Currently Available Z170 Motherboards

The Skylake CPUs won't ship to retailers yet, but motherboard manufacturers are already shipping motherboards by the dozens. As the market is flooded with these new products, it can be hard to know which board to go for. Although we reviewed a few of these motherboards already, until more reviews come in, all you can do is run off specs to make your purchasing decisions, and we endeavored to make that a little easier.

Tom's Hardware has already published a series of articles listing the new motherboards from ASRock, Asus, Biostar, EVGA, Gigabyte, and MSI, but now we have pricing information on these boards, too. Some of these boards are currently only available for pre-order, but most can be purchased online right now from various retailers. Most prices come from Newegg except where stated otherwise.

Another Core i5 6200U Geekbench score, this time 32-bit (Windows).
http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/3182753

ST: 2711
MT: 5728

Faster than the fastest Core i5 5200U 32-bit (Windows) score.

An average score for Core i5 5200U is 2500/5000 for ST/MT, while Core i5 4200U scores around 2300/4500 according to NotebookCheck (@ 32-bit Windows). Surface Pro 4 is going to get a nice boost later this year.

Skylake is a fail from performance perspective. Ain't no benchmarks or graphs gonna change that.
Anyone who upgrades from Sandy or later to Skylake ia doing so because the said person has too much extra money lying around and a severe upgrade itch to go along with it.

You aren't looking at the whole picture. The z170 chipset is the big show here. The cpu is the cherry on top.

I don't see the issue with that. For gaming, that's exactly the right priority.

Myself I will probably get the 6700K just for the guaranteed 4.2GHz and possible MT bonus for other stuff.. not that I really "need" either, at least not for games.

2015 and you went with an i5?

With a 980 Ti?

Why wouldn't he? i7 really don't warrant the extra 100$ not unless you're running stock. And well they are K models. Who is running stock :/

Granted this is from a gamer view.

I've had a 3570k since 2012 and there have been times I wished I had the 3770k. Yes even for certain gaming scenarios. It's rare but there are times when hyperthreading wins out.

He just spent a lot of money on a whole system why not spend extra for the i7 at that point?

I may have spent good deal of money on that HW, but same time I still had budget that I didn't want go over. Either invest less in GPU and get i7 or invest more in GPU and get i5, those were choices from which I was picking as I had set my mind on other stuff.

I decided to invest more in GPU and get i5 because even in 2015! I didn't personally see point in paying 100€ more for HT and small performance increase. Maybe you think I should have taken i7 and weaker GPU or go over budget I had in mind and get i7, but situation is this for upcoming rig.

i5, 16GB of RAM and 980Ti

Extremely good reasoning. From a gamers point of view.. This is a far better option then spending the extra on an i7. 100$ goes alot farther in GPU world then it does CPU world.

Here is the Skylake I/O for U processor line-up:

intel-skylakeufanless-2_674_9b036.png

Interesting that the Pentium 4405U (15W 2.1Ghz 2C/4T) doesn't have PCIe 3.0, but a Celeron SKU below it, 3955U (15W 2.0 Ghz 2C/2T) actually does.

Not getting an i7 in that rig...
That is a very poor decision. Your CPU choice is going to be top of the line CPU performance for the next 5-6 years to come. The GTX 980Ti will come and go in GPU land. Actually, in 2 years, it'll be a midrange GPU. Your i7 will be the top of the line CPU in 2 years and yes don't forget, it'll be still a top of the line CPU in 5 years. It's not going anywhere. The GTX 980 Ti will be no one in 5 years. And this is not to say I don't love the GTX 980 Ti, you'll see me hail that product all day, it's the high end card that actually feels like it is a good value.

Either way though, people don't always make the best decisions, have a great time with your rig, but it's really just the most suboptimal thing possible to not get an i7 in the high end market. I could begin to write paragraphs about it, but meh, I hope you're at least happy with the GTX 980 Ti. As you can tell, I think Nvidia did a bang out job with that card, especially now that I see the competition and have a comparison point.

He just spent a lot of money on a whole system why not spend extra for the i7 at that point?

I budgeted, realized that an i7 would be a better choice in the long run. I saw how relevant sandybridge was even today. I realized that a good mobo/CPU was going to last me 5 years. I knew that 3 years later I'd be wanting a GPU upgrade as a nodeshrink was bound to happen. But hey, I'm looking forward to ignoring 28nm possible. If I get the MSI GTX 980Ti, it's being sold the second the new AMD/Nvidia GPUs come out with a significant performance improvement. But I'd do that knowing I'd be losing $100-200. But most likely, I'll wait as everyone has a massive backlog of games to play, most aren't graphically intense, I can pick the ones that aren't and wait for the GTX 980Ti/Fury X successor to blow me away and get me to that lovely 4K point I want on the games I really want to play. If Direct X 12 mgpu works on the games I actually want to play, well.... I think it'll be hard for me to even get a card considering how much high end gamers will invest in mgpu setups if it works well like direct x 12 promises.

In two years, he can sell the i5 and get the fastest chip he can put in the board, which will probably be faster than the 6700K.

There will likely be a Skylake with edram out by then.
