I just lack a mobo that I want. The ITX boards so far have been one disaster after the other. Seems its a race to the bottom.

Mobo list so far:
http://geizhals.eu/?cat=mbp4_1151

Also a couple of Asus H170 mobos selling at a shop in DK. Someone made a mistake with those and started to sell way way too early.

I am going with the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3. Seems to have all Intel components (Lan, USB, etc) and has everything I need.

After checking out the AnandTech benches, I am pleasantly surprised my Core i7 870 is holding up so well, after 5 years.

If we had competition on the cpu side we would have had 8 cores and plus 10% ipc for same $ by now.
Yes Moores law is crashing and ipc is slowing down but not like only 25% in 5 years.
The lack of need for more cpu perf is at play too.
Damn. How boring :)

No we wouldnt, because thats not what the market ask for.

Another iGPU review.

http://nl.hardware.info/reviews/6223...-1920x1080-low

Most reviews didn't publish their drivers details. Pc watch impress for example did use an old 4186 driver. PCGH did use 4256.

Here's more tests:

No mention of drivers, DDR4-2666.
You can find a few games/benchmarks where HD Graphics 530 (Gen 9) leaves HD4600 (Gen 7.5) in the dust, any architecture details yet?

Hot Hardware's review looks a bit like AnandTech in the old days, definitely worth taking a look.

For our next set of tests, we moved on to some in-game benchmarking with Crysis (DirectX), Bioshock Infinite (DirectX) and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (OpenGL). When testing processors with some games, we drop the resolution and reduce all of the in-game graphical options to their minimum values to isolate CPU and memory performance as much as possible. However, the in-game effects, which control the level of detail for the games' physics engines and particle systems, are left at their maximum values, since these actually place some load on the CPU rather than GPU.

Holy crap, you mean someone actually remembers how to test a CPU for gaming? I thought for sure that was a lost art and left only to us gamers to do for ourselves. Wow, nice find. Although, the difference between 200fps and 300fps is just about 100 useless FPS. But I'd rather know than have NO CLUE due to intentional GPU bottlenecking. And yeah, Skylake did quite well @ 4.6. I'll take one with 6 cores please.

I agree. The amount of reviewers running games at GPU-limited settings and worse, pairing Skylake-S with slow DDR4-2133 RAM is nauseating (AnandTech included). At least some of them got it right.

I'd love to see some 5820k vs 6700K benchmarks, I just can't decide between the two at the moment :(

I'd go 5820K. Having 50% more cores and threads is way better than a 5% ipc increase. You have to OC the 5820k to over 4ghz to make it worth it though.

I'm just sick of consumer/mainstream-grade platforms, after going X99 there's no way I could ever go back. The stability is at least 40-50% better.

This. How hard could it be to put the reviewers to put the numbers on the charts?

I'm about to go compile the numbers myself and make some spreadsheets.

Maximum PC at least has Haswell-E numbers in their review: http://www.maximumpc.com/intel-skylake-review/

How exactly do you quantify stability? I'm not sure putting a % on "stability" really makes sense.

5820K results are subject to the luck of the OC draw. Only a fool would buy one to run at stock, where is is seriously outmatched in ST performance by DC, BDW-C, and SKL.

I really loved and appreciate the in depth review by Ian for the Intel Skylake processors however the conclusion made me go WTF?
" Sandy Bridge, Your Time Is Up ."
What is this supposed to mean? From all the benchmarks its quite obvious and i am sure others will also agree that Skylake is NOT worth upgrading to from Sandy Bridge. So how did Mr. Ian come to the conclusion that Sandy Bridge's time is up?

I don't know, I kind of agree with him. I'm still on a 2600k with a modest overclock of 4.2 and I feel I could use an upgrade. My system feels slow, despite everything else being upgraded. I built a 4790k system for a friend last year and felt quite a difference in just windows performance alone, (photoshop, firefox and chrome mostly, which can be rather heavy with large profiles), and the i6700k is even faster than that paired with good DDR4. So yeah, I agree with Ian, it is time to let go of Sandy Bridge, you will feel the difference and you get lower power consumption (especially at idle) to boot.

I disagree. At stock a Core i7 6700K is 38% faster than Core i7 2600K in CPU-bound games according to Hardware.fr, which means that it will lose even when OCed to 5GHz.
Sure, 5GHz Sandy Bridge is still an awesome chip but 4.6-4.8GHz Skylake-S will be noticeably faster when you are CPU limited.

what stability?

Where does it come from?

Much higher quality components on boards that are designed to meet workstation standards. X99 is on an entirely different level, able to handle much more "abuse" while remaining stable.

Oddly enough, it looks like an L4 equipped Broadwell might be the one to get for gamers coming from older systems, if one can be had.
