Xeon E5 v5 (Purley) is already shipping to select customers. General availability in middle of 2017.
Does this mean Kaby Lake E5 won't come before mid 2018?

Regarding Skylake-X / Kaby Lake-X and the next enthusiast platform (HEDT) - DigiTimes says Intel will debut them in Q3-2017, hinting at Gamescom in August.
My understanding is that the OP specifically asked for Kaby Lake E5.

I'm starting to wonder if Kaby Lake E5 makes any sense, after it's "only" an implementation/process tweak to reach higher frequencies. The link you provide to wccftech indeed doesn't mention such a chip, and jumps from Skylake EP in 1H 2017 to Cannonlake EP in 2018.

There is no 'Kaby Lake' Xeon E5. Their next product is Cannon Lake-EP:

Where do you find 6600k for less than $220 in the first place?

There have been plenty of recent sales with the 6600K under $200. I think it's even gone as low as $180 if you have a Microcenter near you. If the 7350K lands at the rumored $170 price point then you're waiting for no good reason.

Like Pentium G3258 that could just reach Core i3 performance when Overclocked, same goes with Core i3 7350 vs Core i5. If $170 is the price then i would spend $30 more for the Core i5 and have 4 real cores + more L3.

If it launches at $170 it will be the same price as the i3-6320 in 2-3 moths time.
The customers that would have bought the 6320 are now going to buy the 7350k and almost all of them will not even notice the k or not know what the k stands for.
Yes it's a completely idiotic sku since you can oc a i3-6100 to ~4.4-4.5Ghz on a cheap z mobo and have a cheap and fast 4t cpu.

I don't like bclk overclocking with Skylake, so that won't even factor in the decision for me. So the 6100 isn't even overclockable as far as I am concerned.

For me then, it's no contest. Only the pricing is a factor.

Core i5-7600K + Core i7-7700K Review by eTeknix

- Both i5-7600K and i7-7700K samples managed to reach 5.1 GHz
- Their i7-6700K topped out at 4.8 GHz
- iGPU (HD 630) saw a 18-20% performance boost in the two games they tested
- Overclocks:
i5-7600K: 4.9 GHz with 1.335V / 5.0 GHz with 1.345V / 5.1 GHz with 1.395V
i7-7700K: 5.0 GHz with 1.345V / 5.1 GHz with 1.435V
- i5-7600K runs cool even when overclocked
- HDCP 2.2 and Microsoft PlayReady 3.0 compliant
- Lower wattage than Skylake clock-for-clock
- Supports 4K 10-bit HEVC encode/decode and VP9 decode

Different drivers then, or different Bios settings. Skylake supports two driver branches on Windows 10, 15.40 and 15.45. Kabylake only 15.45 which is better. It's HD 630 btw.

Drivers alone got 20% on desktop and 30% on mobile?

Not sure I buy that.

I'm sure mobile is benefiting from the tdp angle.

Mobile is a different matter because Kabylake boosts higher, but this is driver related as well. CPU power budget was prioritized over GPU which is not the case anymore with the newer 15.45 driver branch.

As for the power budget optimization I don't know, for desktop it doesn't matter because it runs full boost. It is important to use the same driver version in a comparison like this, eteknix doesn't even mentioned the driver version. This is pathetic.
