P.S. Does anyone think the Tablet could eventually overtake the Laptop as the most popular second type of computer to have?

Yes, but then not-so-portable laptops will most likely take over desktops. Perhaps we'll see laptops with detachable screens and keyboards that are thicker than we're currently accustomed to with user replaceable hard drives, CPUs, graphics cards, memory, etc., which also offer good docking capabilities.

I, for one, welcome the tablet revolution. Netbooks need to die out, and smart phones either need to get smarter, or need a network revolution. :)

The confusing part to me is all the shuffling that is happening with the Operating systems, but (for me) something like an ultra thin 27" or 21.5" iMac that folds exactly in half to form a Mac Book Pro would hit the spot.

Or how about this:

1. Fullsize configuration: 1920 x 1080 Fullscreen system with desktop keyboard, mouse and printer plugged in.

2. Laptop configuration: 1080 x 960 resolution Screen one side and touchscreen keyboard on the other side.

3. Tablet: The touchscreen keyboard mentioned in #2 is completely removed leaving only half of the computer with the logic part remaining. This would function as a pure Tablet of 1080 x 960 resolution.

Eventually a person's phone will act as their encrypted data store and base CPU, with wireless docking to touch screen displays, keyboards, monitors and home network storage as needed.

That might take another 10 years though ( = 64-fold increase in the phone's CPU power and memory)

I believe that.

P.S. What does the forum think of these products such as Windows 7 Embedded (running on the new ASUS Tegra 2 Tablet). How much difference for the average user? Are we at the point where these lightweight OSes can run Full MS Office provided the CPU is at least x86 based?

Touchscreen vs actual laptop keyboard?

I'd say no.

Aside from Apple, the other would-be Tablet manufacturers just want to ride on the waves of successful products like iPad and hopefully make a dime out of it. They don't try making a good UI or "User Experience" at all.

Touchscreens and on screen keyboards also happen to be shoddy. If you want to actually do some creation of content, there's no substitute for a physical button like on a keyboard.

Maybe so, but not very likely. Netbooks can act as a replacement to laptops, but Tablets and smartphones can't. Tablets will likely remain a side-device which will keep the marketshare to a niche. At least smartphones can be used as a phone and is very portable.

I haven't really used a touch screen keyboard before, but what you are saying definitely sounds true to me. (I'm sure using a mechanical keyboard would feel far more natural and comfortable to nearly everyone).

But what if the industry gets into a scenario where creation of Content via Voice becomes more effective? Maybe then the only reason to use mouse/stylus or touchscreen keyboard would be for "corrections".

Man, I'd hate that. Of course its just my opinion. Yes I have a touchscreen device, a Atom Z520 based UMPC. I love touchscreens, but having to do everything entirely via touchscreens would be very annoying.

And on screen keyboards really suck. Even if it was good, I want physical feedback so i don't need to look at the screen.

Have the on screen keyboards been improving?

This preview is mentioning something called "Haptic Technology" to aid with the keyboard feedback.
