Er, did he actually say Haswell laptops because this makes it sound like its the Bay Trail based ones, which big deal.

For devices built around the Bay Trail silicon, Krzanich believes that there will be eight to 10 clamshell models available at the $299 price point.

I have no doubt we'll see some 14 inch, 5 pound, 1 inch thick, brick with a Celeron branded 1.4GHz dual core "Haswell", with 1366x768 TN display for $300.

If Intel really starts making Atom chips on its best processes then by 2015 we could have iPad-form factor Windows tablets with i3 levels of power.

Do it Intel, I am sick of mobile always being one step away from perfect.

EDIT:

Here is what I want:

-Core 2 Duo levels of power (see? not picky)
-Windows 8.1 x86
-1080p screen
-A GPU better in every way than my ION netbook
-Transformer Infinity form factor (thin with NO fans and a detachable dock)
-iPad 2 OG battery life
-HDMI out in some way (can be mini, can be DP)

That is the next bigger than 9 inch computing device I buy, even if I have to wait until 2016.

why wait?

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7314/intel-baytrail-preview-intel-atom-z3770-tested/2

Bay Trail Z3770 (TDP ~4W, $37 per unit) is roughly equal or better than A4-5000

http://techreport.com/review/24856/amd-a4-5000-kabini-apu-reviewed/4

A4-5000(== Z3770) is maybe 80% performance of i3-3217U

remember, i3-3217U is a 17W part (and it's ULV too, and price is $225 per unit)

Well they got the form factor thing down already. The Dell Venue 8 Pro is pretty nice at only 400 grams and 8.9mm thick.

Same. I'm still using my Core 2 Duo Penryn and Baytrail is supposedly as fast at this.
I honestly expect these specs in the 300-500 price range NOW. This is getting ridiculous.

yeah, but my T8300 C2D Penryn emits heat like crazy...

Clover Trail doesn't

you get those improvements and a lower price after 5+ years :D

When the GPU can beat the Geforce 8500 GT and the chassis is iPad 2 thin with no fans I will buy.

That is at least another year or two.
looks like Bay Trail is ~60% of a 8500 GT..

you'll probably get your wish on the next iteration of atom

the dell venue 8 pro is 9x130x216, but resolution sucks
dell venue 11 pro is 10.2-15x177x280 @ 1080p
asus T100 is 10.5x171x263 and resolution sucks

iPad 2 is 9.4x186x241

10 hours what though? It will be important to know the specifics. There's standby time, screen on time, web browsing, video playback, etc.

It's usually web browsing.

You'll have to wait for reviewers to get this in their hands to get more specifics.

why? a tablet with some real computing power sounds perfect

Often the size and form factors are compromises.

10 inch hybrids are fairly nice sized for tablets but are too small for keyboards.

11.6 inch hybrids are decent size keyboards, but too big as tablets.

Some tablets have kickstands instead of keyboard dock so don't rest well in the lap, like the Surface.

It would be nice to have a 2 in 1 hybrid, but there are sacrifices made for the convenience.

Decent tablets, like the Asus MeMo Pad HD 7, are already down to $150.
But to most people here, it's trash and I'd agree. I'd take an iPad Mini over the Memo Pad HD 7 for straight out of the box usage. Sure it costs more, but that's fine. Users want a quality experience, and they will pay a bit more if it gives them that. To me there's still no solid Android tablet experience other than the Nexus series.

B.S. I'd bet most people here would like it.

You almost always prefer Apple products. I'd rather have the Asus since the MeMo Pad HD 7 has the superior resolution and a MicroSD slot. It's only half the price to. The Mini is a rip off.

Well I'm not sure I'd put that in the decent category. Display looks decent and that's about it.

It's got a crappy generic Mediatek 1.2GHz A9 processor. That'll probably be slower than last year's Kindle Fire tablets and they were kinda slow.

And it has a weird design with the part of the edge seam sticking out for it's optional case to latch on to, but looks like would make it uncomfortable to hold.

Sadly I still don't see anything cheaper than the Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD worth buying. But the Fire HD is down to $140 now I think.

I agree. I'll give up the convenience if the sacrifices are too big.

if anyone can do it, it's Intel.

I am rooting for Intel to prevail here, and always thinking from consumer's POV.

however realistically many will always prefer fruit stamped alternative instead.

99 dollar tablets already exist, they're just complete junk. Hopefully, Intel means decent 99 dollar tablets. :p

Seconded. Aside from a tiny niche, convertibles and swivel models are going to be laughed at in a few years. How did anyone ever contemplate making such an asinine device, etc.

Pretty sure most people would just cough up for a Nexus 7. It's only slightly more.

No I don't almost always prefer Apple products. If I wanted a 7" tablet, I'd buy a Nexus 7 2013. You're right the Mini is a ripoff but if I want functionality, the Mini's likely better than this Memo Pad.

TBH, the real competitor in tablets against iPads is the Nexus line, and for more mainstream consumers maybe the Kindle. None of these OEMs are releasing anything worth buying TBH. They just can't compete with the loss leader model in pricing.
