INTEL saved my little AMD!!

I had just finished building this Duron 900 System. Since we have a dearth of good heatsink & fans here in India, i installed the best unit i had access to : An Intel OEM Fan from a P3 933 Box Procesor!!

I switched the system on and set up the bios, partitioned the HDD and was in the process of loading Windows when my little nephew asked me why wasn't the fan moving!! Holy S_it !!

The machine had been running for almost an hour now! I switched it off in the middle of the install. The heatsink was real real hot. I let it cool down.

I had forgotton to plug in the fan connector to the mobo!!

Later on i checked the system and it worked perfectly. The properly seated large INTEL heatsink had saved my AMD Duron.

I use a PIII coppermine HSF on a K6-2 450.. it cools it fine..
any more and i'd be hesitant.. the CuMine HSF's are nothing compared to the Coolermaster stock AMD HSF's. they're far bigger...

I honestly don't know how your Duron lived through that!!!

Depends on which Cumine HS you are talking about. The small ones that go on the lower clocked CPU's are nothing special. The ones that come with the faster CPU's are sweet. The one that came with my PIII 1G is very large, and very quiet. It cools just as well as the Taisol I had and makes even less noise.

i'm thinking of 866's mainly, i build alot of 866 systems for my company and the coolers work fine on the PIII, but it's nothing impressive.

i've never seen a 1GHz PIII cooler... hopefully I don't either, that CPU is still selling for around $300 Cdn here... YUCK!

I've seen the 866 cooler. It's "in between". Not as small as a 733 HS, but not as big as a 1G. CuMines run cool. They dont need a huge HS/Fan.

I think the title of this thread should be "little nephew saved my AMD"...., or maybe "curiosity saves the day".
