Intel RMA policy

My i5 2500k died a few weeks ago. On Intel's website, you can input the FPO number on the processor to get an estimated warranty expiration date. It was December 2014.

The live chat support only asked for the FPO, not for receipt or proof of purchase, so I assume they use the same tool to determine whether a product is still within the warranty period.

I just received the replacement (UPS 2 day air). It looks completely new. The box's edges are perfect, factory sealed sticker has never been taken off, shiny processor, etc.

I typed in the FPO of the new one and it said the warranty expires on 2017.

Does the warranty period reset after an RMA? Oversight or intentional? Wishful thinking on my part? :sneaky:

Even if it does. Still there is little chance that a processor will die like your did. So, you probably won't need to do a RMA again. Until or unless you do something really stupid like overclocking etc. In which case the warranty would become void itself.
 
Considering the fact that your CPU died before it was supposed to... I would guess that Intel resets your warranty in hopes that you're not pissed at them for the CPU dieing.

True. As for how the original one died, my PSU (Seasonic X series) died and took out the motherboard and the processor.
 
From Intel

The replacement product is warranted under this written warranty and is subject to the same limitations and exclusions for ninety (90) days or the remainder of the original warranty period, whichever is longer. If Intel replaces the Product, the Limited Warranty period for the replacement Product is not extended.
 
It was already posted, but I have never seen Intel not giving at least a 90 day policy on any replacement CPU even if you call them on your last day of warranty.

That said, it's extremely rare an Intel CPU dies for the most part unless abused. I have encountered a few in my time that just became flaky for whatever reasons. I have encountered AMD CPUs that did as well.
 
Your CPU really died? Wow first time I have genuinely seen that be the case when someone wasn't crazy overclocking. Good to know it can happen.

Well it wasn't a fault of the processor itself, but a faulty PSU. Intel's RMA process was pretty painless.
 
If you need to file an RMA next time, just file it the same way you did now :awe:

Their policy states 90 days or remainder of original warranty, which is more or less a universal warranty policy for most hardware I've come across.
 
Just note they will deny any RMA cpu that show burn marks. That does not really happen anymore with with the heat spreaders but just note if you forget thermal paste or do something that causes marks on the CPU, it is a paper weight.
