Is there any disadvantage with leaving the thermal goo on the retail heatsink with a new P4 2.8, andputting artic silver on the cpu? Does that black pad really need to come off?

If so....any tips on getting it off?

Take it off if you are using AS. The black TIM is on two sides of a piece of foil. Peel the foil off, and most of it will be gone. I use Goof Off to clean what is left, then rubbing alcohol for final cleaning.

Agreed, one or the other, not both.
