I have a retail intel 1.7ghz chip that came with an intel heatsink/fan. I recently bought an OEM 2.8ghz intel chip with no fan. Can I use the heatsink from the f1.7 on the new chip. Does it have enough cooling power?

It MIGHT. I kinda doubt it though. You can put it on and watch your temps @ idle and load and see what they're like.

So intel uses different rated heatsink/fan combos on different chip speeds?
By the way it would only be temporary. I have a good one on order.

Yes, the HSFs Intel packages with their CPUs are generally different/more powerful. As i said though, you could give your old one a shot, just keep an eye on the temps, and if they climb to high just wait for your new one to get in.
