hello everyone

i got WD1002FAEX SATA3 drive
but intel rapid storage technology only showing 3Gbps or SATA2
is this normal behavior?

here the IntelRST report :
Disk on port 4
Port location: Internal
Status: Normal
Type: Hard disk
Size: 932 GB
Serial number: ***************
Model: WDC WD1002FAEX-00Z3A0
Firmware: 05.01D05
System disk: No
Password protected: No
Disk data cache: Enabled
Native command queuing: Yes
SATA transfer rate: 3 Gb/s
Physical sector size: 512 Bytes
Logical sector size: 512 Bytes

my system mobo is gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 rev2 (Bios FC)
ICH10R - Intel RST version 10.5.0.1027

i know ICH10R only support sata2, but it should report the right drive type right ?
or because the limitation it reporting sata2 only ?

hope someone can give info regarding this

i did connect to marvel controller, but seems there some issue Marvell Storage Utility (4.1.0.1915) not showing the drive connected to the ports
and i haven't tried to reinstall the driver + MSU

so i just connect to Intel ICH10R port
do ICH10R only report SATA2 (3Gbps) even SATA3 drive connected to it ?

i thought ICH10R even though only support SATA2, it will showing correct drive specification

I think I read something about checking that you've left hot-plugging enabled in the BIOS. It may have just been related to troubleshooting recent Intel chipset problems though.

hot-plugging on bios ?
i don't think my mobo BIOS got such setting, but i will check again more carefully

what i remember for ICH10R on bios setting are ICH control mode (IDE/AHCI/RAID)
and SATA native mode setting

anyway, i am curious do ICH10R report SATA3 (6Gbps) when SATA3 drive plugged in it
or it only report SATA2 because it only support SATA2?
anyone know about this ?
if it do report SATA3, then it means either intel RST bugs or WD1002FAEX bugs

after i search about this on internet, i read that WD1002FAEX-00Y9A0 been reported that some only being detected as SATA2
but not WD1002FAEX-00Z3A0... wonder if 00Z3A0 also plagued by same issue

its not error, it might performance reduction
well we know hdd nowhere from using 100% of sata2 speed
so even it on sata3 the performance increase seems just minor

so like what i am asking about above:
" do ICH10R report SATA3 (6Gbps) when SATA3 drive plugged in it
or it only report SATA2 because it only support SATA2?
anyone know about this ?"

that's normal, it's not going to report faster than your port speeds.

That would be my take on it exactly. The drives are downwardly compatible to the older controllers. It would seem that the system would report the negotiated speed. Nothing to worry about there . . . . [And Yo! How's it been, Larry?]
