Intel RAID10 constantly repairing...

Im running 4 1TB drives in RAID10 and the array is always healthy on boot (during POST), but when running there is constant repairing occurring. I noticed a high level of disk activity after boot so i installed the Intel Storage GUI and now know for a fact that my array is repairing on boot. Is this normal? It my home machine and any oddities would be known by me (sole user). Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA.
 
run diagnostics on all drives in the array.

When you let it finish repairing does it still start repairing again on the next boot?
 
why are you rebooting? crash? power outage? raid is only meant for 100% stable environments. uptime 300 days kinda systems. Your nas should never need rebooting unless its a driver issue.

some systems with cheap raid and buggy o/s will not wait long enough during a shutdown or reboot and the drives will not flush their cache (disable the drive cache). or by a real raid controller with flash backed (battery) write cache.

crashing (random reboots or reset button or power button) is not allowed with raid. why you don't overclock the bus (and sata bus) and use ecc-ram. you want 100% uptime.

Typically i say intel raid for 0 only.
 
is the o/s or computer shutting down before the cache is purged on the (raid/drives themselves?) thus leaving them in a dirty state? what happens if you don't shutdown but reboot into the bios? is the raid still dirty?
 
The very first home RAID 1 system I ever built had a problem with freqently rebuilding the array. The new, identical, Hitachi 160 GB disks passed standard diagnostics programs, but on reboot the HighPoint IDE RAID card reported long spinup times on one of the disks. I replaced that disk with a Seagate disk and never had a rebuld again. It's been running flawlessly for six years now.

All drives are healthy. After repair there is no rebuild for a week or so. Then on POST it signals that the array needs to verify. After this it wants to rebuild on every boot until i let if fully repair. After repair the process restarts, good for a week or so, then it wants to rebuild. Im using the integrated intel hardware on a Gigabyte EX58-UD4P.

@Vivi, the OS is on the array.

@Emulux, its my home machine, not a server or nas. I have run RAID0 (different machine and build) in the past and did this for various reasons (I also run weekly external backups). How can i be sure that the cache is purged before shutdown? Im running Win7 Pro.
 
try disabling the write cache on the drives and see if it happens.

intel matrix raid really really is mostly only good for raid-0 - i've had far too many failures (even RE4 with raid-1) on just about everything. switched to jbod.


you overclocking? when you shutdown do a restart - then go into the bios and wait a minute. then power off.

I assume you never crash/no hard resets/always battery backed up right?
 
What HDDs are being used? There are some features that help drives in RAID. Look up TLER. It could be that the drives aren't suitable for RAID.

Write-back cache is disabled, but each drive has write cache enabled. Disabling individually is probably somewhere in the BIOS or the This mobo has two ports for jbod, 6 for intel. Im running 4 drives in RAID.

I am OCing. I will try that BIOS trick and see if it works.

In a year i have had one hard crash, but otherwise i never hard reset/reboot. Plus, as i said above the array is write-back cache disabled.

@Zap, they are cheap Hitachi 1TB drives. ~$70/each a year ago.
